Once More, With Meaning!

When I was growing up, one of our many ‘moms’ used to get all arms-crossed over the chest-like if she asked us how we were doing, and we answered with the typical teenage sigh of “Fine.”

You see, in her mind, Fine is an acronym for:

Fucked up
Insecure
Neurotic and
Emotional

So, we weren’t allowed to use that as an answer – though since we were teens, it was probably spot on! – we had to give more in-depth details than that.  I revisited those memories today, as I was dealing with my own kids, and I began wondering about all of the other words I grew up hearing that also happen to be well-known acronyms.  Here are a few of my favorites:

Fornication
Under
Consent of
King

Away

Out
Leave

Missing
In
Action…….  (Technically, this is a straight-up acronym that hasn’t been turned into a ‘word,’ but I use it frequently when talking about someone who’s unusually unreachable.)

Beyond
All
Recognition

Thanks to one of my recent Flash Facts Friday posts, I also now know that in Australia, POETS [Day] can stand for:

Piss
Off
Early
Tomorrow’s
Saturday… (A new personal favorite)

I know there are a lot more word-acronyms out there, like LASER and RADAR, but they’re not quite as much fun as the ones listed above.  Do you have any unique word-acronyms you grew up with or have heard somewhere?
