I’m not sure why this memory has always stuck with me, but I clearly remember when my mom pointed out to me that Rick Allen, the drummer for Def Leppard, only had one arm. I think it was one of those parenting moments where she was trying to instill in me the virtue of never giving up on your dreams no matter what. That and she genuinely admired him. I had never noticed before, honestly, I suppose I’d just been too busy rocking out to the music. At that moment, I thought Rick Allen had to be the greatest musician ever in the history of music.
Sometime after this, I announced that I was going to grow up to become a drummer and my mom was thrilled. Turns out, Rick Allen was already the best musician in all of rock history, along with every other drummer out there, because drum lessons are the most boring lessons on the planet! I think I lasted 2 weeks – much to my mom’s disappointment. She was hoping I’d be able to play “Wipe Out” for her someday.
Anyway, I couldn’t get through my 80’s binge without posting at least one Def Leppard song. They had SO many great hits that I still love, but my top picks were always “Photograph” and this one…
