#RocktoberMusicFest ♪ “Nothing Else Matters” – Metallica

I usually say I’m the daughter of a musician, because my dad can play different instruments – BUT – first and foremost, I’m the daughter of a guitarist. Acoustic, electric, steel, ukulele, banjo, dad can jam on just about anything with strings.

You have to watch him at family BBQ’s, though. This is where he likes to sneak the banjo out and pick the creepy chords from Deliverance.

“Daaaaaaaaaad…”
“Oh c’mon, it’s funny.”
“You’re scaring the neighbors.”
“I know, that’s why it’s funny.”

Yep, my twisted sense of humor is all natural, folks, what can I say? 😉

And my dad’s one of those musicians who can play by ear, too, the brat. He doesn’t need sheet music like the rest of us. Growing up with the sound of live guitar music definitely influenced my love for the instrument and there are certain songs where the guitar will instantly cut right through the fabric of my reality, put me in a trance and I’m a slave to it for life. It will always have that power over me, even years later.

Metallica is known for their guitar rifts and intros, it’s one of their trademarks, so it’s not easy to pick a song that demonstrates that better than the rest. And I know, I totally picked a “girly” song from the lot, but you just stick around and I’ll show you some real girly metal [insert evil grin here]. This is my Metallica Guitar Song, the one that did me in from the first note. (Fade to Black is a very close second.) Enjoy!

Man, I totally forgot how bad I used to crush on Lars back in the day…*sigh*

  1. Your dad sounds like a truly awesome dude. Your love for Metallica reminds me of another blogger, Debbie D Doglady. I’m sure she’d be joining in the fun, except she’s been traveling Europe with her husband for the past month. Hopefully she’ll join us later in the month or next year. I get the Lars crush thing, too. I used to have one as well until the whole ordeal with Napster and then I just lost a little bit of respect for him. But that’s not stopping me from enjoying the music 🙂

    Thanks for playing along today!

    1. Thanks, Maru, I think he’s pretty awesome! 🙂 Yeah, that whole Napster ordeal cost the band a lot of fans, unfortunately and they never recovered. But, I still enjoy their music, too.

  2. Your dad sounds like a real hoot! And scaring the neighbors by playing the Deliverance music is something *I* would do for the hell of it, LOL!

I’m not sure I like Metallica much as people these days, but their music is always tight and enjoyable. I feel very fortunate to have been able to see them live before Cliff died. I’m like Mary, though…just lost a lot of respect for them after Napster, and then a little bit more after a cease and desist letter was sent to one of their tribute bands. I just can’t with them anymore as people and business men. But damn them, their music is good and I can’t stop myself from still listening!

This is one of those songs that has been covered by several artists and sounds right in just about any genre….but even the original, “harder” version by Metallica is a song any rocker chick would be proud to dance to at her wedding!

I can’t wait to come back and see what you choose tomorrow!

    1. LOL, thanks Kim, my dad definitely has his moments! 😀

Man, I didn’t know about the cease and desist, that’s ridiculous. Ugh. But, yeah, they’re still easy to listen to on occasion. I might take a break from them for awhile now with this new disappointment, though. 😐

Thanks for stopping by, I’m off to see what everyone picked for today! 😀

  3. Melody,

I always wanted to learn how to play the guitar. My daddy does a little banjo picking and he plays by ear, too. He might’ve played the guitar some as well but I can’t swear to it. I have small hands. Every time I tried playing I’d get frustrated because I couldn’t reach the chords right. I reckon if I REALLY wanted to learn I’d figure a way around it but I didn’t. I think your daddy is a remarkable talent!

Metallica isn’t my forte in mewsical choices but this band surprises me sometimes, like with this song – very nice and it has a beautiful lead in. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Thanks, Cathy! I have small hands, too, but I was never really interested in playing the guitar. That gene skipped me and went straight to my baby sister, lol. My string instrument of choice is the piano. Another difficult one to try to play with short fingers, but I’m still determined to finish lessons one of these days. 🙂
