#SongLyricSunday & #RocktoberMusicFest ♫ “Voices” – Motionless In White

Alright, it’s time for another combo post covering both the #SLS & #RMF music challenges. I really try not to go too far out on a limb with Helen’s themes, especially when we get so much time to prepare, but I just couldn’t settle on anything with the actual theme word in the title or lyrics. I’ve either posted the song before or the band is already scheduled to appear sometime this month for the #RMF event.

This week’s theme is: Hidden

I’ve chosen “Voices”  by a band I just discovered in the last 4 or 5 years, Motionless In White. It’s about his internal struggle to keep his true self “hidden”, because he knows he’ll be judged by others. It’s understandable if you don’t care for this type of music, but the lyrics are below if you’d like to read them. Trust me, this song is the tamest, least screamo track of theirs I’ve ever heard. Motionless In White is best known for their outspoken, sometimes controversial (“America”) lyrics that touch on ugly, uncomfortable topics.

My regular blogpeeps got a small taste of the more ‘screamo’ style Chris Motionless when he featured in New Years Day’s “Angel Eyes” that I shared in a previous post (which was the first one I thought of for this theme!). But we all keeps parts of ourselves “hidden” out of fear of being judged by others, so hopefully this song isn’t too much of a stretch.

Enjoy!

Voices, In my head again
Trapped in a war inside my own skin
They’re pulling me under
(Go!)

I’ve swallowed myself but the fever remains
I’m numb to the pleasure but still feel the pain
If I showed you my soul would you cover your eyes?
If I told you the truth would you dare me to lie?

I keep it all inside because I know that man is everything but kind

Voices, In my head again
Baiting me in a war I can’t win
I can hear them now
Trapped in a game inside my own skin
And I don’t know myself anymore
They’re pulling me under
Voices, Voices

As I walk through this valley of shadows and death
I curse not the wicked, I praise not the blessed
If I told you the truth, you’d beg me to change
If fear were a currency, you’d own the bank

Voices, in my head again
Baiting me in a war I can’t win
I can hear them now
Trapped in a game inside my own skin
And I don’t know myself anymore
They’re pulling me under
Voices

I don’t want to live so callous and frozen
Ugly and hopeless
I don’t want to live forever
I just want to live right now
You can’t take me from me

Voices in my head again
Head again

Voices in my head again
Baiting me in a war I can’t win
I can hear them now
Trapped in a game inside my own skin
And I don’t know myself anymore
They’re pulling me under
Voices
(They’re pulling me under)
Voices
They’re pulling me under
Voices, voices
I keep it all inside because I know that man is everything but kind
I keep it all inside because I know that man is everything but kind

  1. Interesting. I think the shock value of the look might put people who don’t usually listen to this type of music off so they think this band’s not for them. But the lyrics are smart, and I heard lots of influences beyond metal, like a little Green Day, some Sex Pistols, and 80s stuff like Depeche Mode, etc. Thanks for introducing me to something I’m fairly sure I wouldn’t have found on my own.

    1. Thanks, Tara! That’s true, the looks of a band can put people off, I think KISS mastered that back in the 70’s LOL. This song is quite a different sound than what I’m used to from Motionless in White, but it’s catchy and I do like the lyrics. Always happy to introduce new bands to people. 🙂

  3. Nice interpretation of the word for the day! I’m usually not a huge fan of screamo, but I can take it in small doses. This is one that I’d listen to occasionally.

    1. Thanks, Mary! Yes, this is quite mellow compared to their normal stuff. I never thought I would like screamo, but occasionally it just suits my mood or characters I’m working with in my books. I don’t think I could listen to it constantly, though, lol.

  4. You had me at less “screamo!” 😂😂😂

Between my sons and nephews, I’ve heard it all. Would I buy it or add it to a playlist? No. But I think we NEED to read the lyrics and hear songs like this a time or two to understand the attraction and connection to our children and young people in general. Those are killer lyrics and extremely relatable. Good choice. 😉

    1. LOL, way to turn that around on me, Fle! 😂

Thanks, I’m glad you liked the lyrics and it’s true that we could learn a lot by at least reading some of these unknown songs our kids listen to. I know you’re a fellow rocker, but I don’t expect even rockers to like screamo, it’s definitely an acquired taste.

p.s. I made a new meme for us inspired by this month of music – gonna put it up on IG soon. 😀

  5. Melody,

I have to admit, I have a hard time watching performers like this group. They just seem a bit off-key so I’d rather listen to their mewsic instead of looking at the. Motionless in White is an introduction and their mewsic style is heavier than I prefer but I welcome a chance to hear a bands’ mewsic. I enjoy expanding my mewsic knowledge base. Have roctastic week!

    1. It’s always good to try new things out, even if you end up not liking it – and believe me, I totally understand that bands like this are an acquired taste. 🙂

  6. I like this! I do listen to a lot of these kind of bands/songs, and have heard of Motionless in White. That’s because one of my favorite artists (for years) has been Tim Skold, who produced some of their songs, and performed on some, too. I’ve followed his career since the beginning, and they did a big promotion for Motionless in White before.
Thanks for sharing this one! 🙂
