#RocktoberMusicFest ♫ “Giving In” – Adema

You know, until now I’ve never tried to pinpoint what it is about this song that I like so much. You only need to skim the surface of the lyrics, to know that the song is about giving into an addiction, which isn’t something I can immediately relate to. Yet, if you dive into the deeper emotions below the lyrics, I have definitely felt this way before. Because it’s not altogether an addiction, so much as giving into something–anything–that leaves you feeling a little dead inside the next day. That’s how I interpret the “dying tonight” verse, it’s not a physical death…it’s the tiny deaths of the person you used to be, or the person you want to be; and that covers a wide range of bad decisions. I think that’s why this song is so relatable to a variety of people and situations.

I’ve had this on my immediate playlist since it first hit the airwaves in 2001. It’s just everything dark, uncomfortable, enraged, self-deprecating and when you’re in that mood, it’s the one that usually does the trick. Plus, it’s a fantastic outlet for when I’m working with characters who have this kind of energy and I need to either tap into it or release it.

This is the only song I know by Adema off the top of my head. I bought the CD when it came out, because there was no such thing as “streaming” back then, but I can’t recall any of the other songs from the album. I couldn’t find a lyrics video that sounded good, so this is the official one. I recommend hitting play and then not watching the video while listening – you’ll hear so much more without the visual distraction. Enjoy!
