#RocktoberMusicFest ♫ “Aaliyah Remembered” & “Change (In The House of Flies)” – Queen Of The Damned Soundtrack

Anne Rice, author of Queen of the Damned, has been my absolute, 100% favorite author since I was a teen and read Interview With The Vampire about a year before it was made into a movie, which triggered a lifelong obsession with her books, spanning all of her genres and pseudonyms.

Aaliyah was one of my favorite artists from her debut in the early 90’s. She was also one of the youngest singer/songwriters and actresses to reach her level of super-stardom by the time she played the starring role of Akasha. Although Queen of the Damned was not her first blockbuster hit – having already starred opposite Jet Li in Romeo Must Die – tragically, it was her last. The movie was still in editing when Aaliyah’s sudden death shocked the entire world and added her to the long list of musicians killed in small plane crashes.

It was rumored that the studios considered cancelling the release, worried how her family and fans would respond due to Aaliyah’s character in the movie. But, they went through with the final stages and it opened in theaters 6 months following her tragic loss. There’s a dedication to Aaliyah at the end with additional behind the scenes footage of her, leaving viewers with the lasting impression of a smiling, happy, beautiful and multi-talented young woman, rather than the evil vampiress she’d portrayed in the film. I’ve included an additional video below titled “Aaliyah Remembered” that’s quite similar to that dedication, with her brother and the crew who worked on The Queen of the Damned with her.

The soundtrack for Queen of the Damned is another great compilation of hit songs, featuring tracks like “Down With The Sickness” by Disturbed and “Dead Cell” by Papa Roach. But there has only ever been one song that evokes memories of the movie for me every time I hear it and that’s “Change (In the House of Flies)” by Deftones. Enjoy!

  1. Melody,

We watched this movie and I recalled reading about her death after seeing it. I don’t remember what sparked my interest to read about Aaliyah but it’s always a tragedy to read of someone so young who perishes. Great song pick!

    1. I was a bartender and working when the news alert came across the big screen announcing that her plane had gone down and that she hadn’t survived. I just remember being so shocked, like it shouldn’t be possible, even though John Denver had gone down the same way a few years earlier. It was definitely a tragic day.
