#SongLyricSunday | Try Again – Aaliyah

A big Thank You to our host, Jim over at A Unique Title For Me for another week of musical themes to challenge ourselves with. I was actually surprised I thought of a song right off the bat, since there are so many frequently used words to choose from. Make sure you click on the theme link below to check out all of the other song picks for today!

This week’s theme is: Could | Might | Should | Would

I went with Aaliyah’s “Try Again” from the Romeo Must Die soundtrack. This was one of the best movies when it came out, but then, I’m a fan of Jet Li, Aaliyah, and William Shakespeare so I’m biased. The movie was reportedly a ‘loose’ adaptation of Romeo & Juliet (I’d say extremely loose). Though it’s not my all-time favorite Aaliyah or Jet Li movie, if you’ve never seen it, I highly recommend it and have included the movie trailer at the end of this post.

Last October (2018) I did a post for #Rocktoberfest that went into more detail about the late and highly talented Aaliyah with an “Aaliyah Remembered video” that you can check out here. For those of you who didn’t know of her, she was yet another star still on the rise when she died in a tragic plane crash in 2001- just one year after the release of this song and following the filming of her second movie and blockbuster hit: The Queen of The Damned. I still remember watching the “Breaking News” broadcast and just feeling completely shocked. She was too young and so talented both in her acting and her singing career.

“Try Again” was the lead single from the Romeo Must Die movie soundtrack. It reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 & Hot 100 Airplay, #3 on the Mainstream Top 40, and was at #12 for the Year-End chart for 2000. The video features Timbaland, Aaliyah, and Jet Li. According to Wikipedia, the mirrored hall in the video was inspired by Bruce Lee’s Enter The Dragon. The video won the MTV Music Award for “Best Video From A Film” and “Best Female Video.” It was choreographed by Fatima Robinson, who has choreographed videos for Michael Jackson, Meghan Trainor, Mary J. Blige, The Black Eyed Peas, and more.

The section where Jet helps Aaliyah run on the wall was a reenactment of a scene from the movie and I just love the candidness they captured in the video of Jet laughing and them playing around with the move like a dance. Enjoy!

It’s been a long time (long time), we shouldn’t of left you (left you),
Without a dope beat to step to (step to, step to, step to, step to).
It’s been a long time (long time), we shouldn’t of left you (left you),
Without a dope beat to step to (step to, step to, step to, step to).

What would you do, to get to me?
What would you say, to have your way?
Would you give it up or try again?
If I hesitate to let you in?
Now would you be yourself, or play a role?
Tell all the boys, or keep it low?
If I say no, would you turn away,
Or play me off or would you stay?
Oh

If at first you don’t succeed (first you don’t succeed),
Dust yourself off, and try again
You can dust it off and try again, try again
Cause if at first you don’t succeed (first you don’t succeed),
Dust yourself off, and try again
You can dust it off and try again, dust yourself off and try again, try again

I’m into you, you into me? But I can’t let it go, so easily.
Not ’till I see, where this could be, could be eternally, or just week.
You know our chemistry, it’s off the chain.
It’s perfect now, but will it change?
This ain’t a yes, this ain’t a no.
Just do your thang, and we’ll see how it goes.
Ooooh

If at first you don’t succeed (first you don’t succeed),
Dust yourself off, and try again
You can dust it off and try again, try again
Cause if at first you don’t succeed (first you don’t succeed),
Dust yourself off, and try again
You can dust it off and try again, dust yourself off and try again, try again

See you don’t wanna throw it all away.
I might be shy on the first day,
But what about the next day? (huh, huh, huh, huh)
See you don’t wanna throw it all away.
I might be buggin’ on the first day,
But what about the next day? (huh, huh, huh, huh)

It’s been a long time (long time), we shouldn’t of left you (left you),
Without a dope beat to step to (step to, step to, step to, step to)

  2. For years Li was one of the most electrifying martial arts actors in the world and I always loved that movie Kiss of the Dragon. I think he is still making movies, but I read that he had some health issues. It is so sad that Aaliyah died in a plane crash, as she had a lot of talent.

    1. If Li is still making movies, he’s not doing any martial arts in them. He has hyperthyroidism and can’t let his heart rate exceed so high, so was told he had to stop doing martial arts altogether or he’d die.

I can’t imagine being told that the thing you love doing most can kill you, that must have been the hardest thing for him to have to give up.
