#RocktoberMusicFest ♫ “Devil In I” – Slipknot

Tomorrow is Halloween, which is still one of my favorite holidays of the year, despite no longer celebrating it the same way I used to. From the time I was 14 up until just a few years ago, my family would throw the biggest annual Halloween Party every single year. We would spend the entire months of September and October decorating and altering the interior of the house based on a different theme.

The party offered families a fun night in a safe environment, rather than out in the neighborhoods after dark. Plus, we encouraged everyone to make their own costumes, instead of spending a fortune at the store. That ended up becoming kind of a costume challenge for some and let me tell you, there were some really talented competitors!

Speaking of costumes – or masks, more accurately – metal band Slipknot has been the reigning champion for years. They’re pretty well known and front-man, Corey Taylor is even more popular as a multi-band artist, as he is simultaneously the lead singer of the less-metal and mask-free band, Stone Sour and manages to tour with both. He’s also featured with other bands like Apocalyptica, Korn, Kings of Chaos and a TON more. He apparently doesn’t like to be idle, not that his fans are complaining. Songs like “Snuff” and “Dead Memories” are probably the most well known Slipknot tracks, because they’re the only ones radios seem willing to play.

But, in honor of tomorrow’s holiday of all things spooky and devilishly dark, I’ve chosen the song “Devil In I”, which highlights one of Corey’s signature moves of combining metal riffs with ballad-style verses.

Warning: The video is very disturbing and has blood/self-mutilation, so watch at your own risk! Might be best just to hit play and then hide the screen while you listen, instead.

#RocktoberMusicFest ♫ “Heavy Prey” -Underworld Awakening Soundtrack

Which do you root for in movies or books, Vampires or Werewolves? I’ve always been a Vamp girl, myself. So much so, that by the age of 15, I’d read everything I could get my hands on about Prince Vlad III of Wallachia. You could say that when I get interested in something, I don’t just fall down the rabbit hole, I jet-pack. 😀

Of course, back then, there was no such thing as the “internet” only the local public library so that research took a bit more time than it would in today’s world. I’m still not a fan of Werewolves, but now that I’m much a little older, I do have a lot of appreciation for (and major investment in) Wolf Shifters. I would much prefer cuddling up to one of those than even a Vamp, but I suppose they don’t make for good horror films.

As far as the most epic Vampire vs Werewolf battle goes, I think we can all agree that crown goes to the Underworld franchise. So, I present: “Heavy Prey”, sung by Lacey Sturm of Flyleaf with former Filter guitarist, Geno Lenardo, from the Underworld Awakening soundtrack. In my last post for Flyleaf, I promised a look at Lacey’s more powerful vocal range that could knock a giant over, and this is it. It’s also a prime example of how combining a great movie with equally great musicians makes for a really kick a$$ video. Enjoy!

#RocktoberMusicFest ♫ “Cry, Little Sister” – The Lost Boys Soundtrack

I may have mentioned almost every day a couple times this week that I’m dedicating this last run of October to straight-up Halloween songs. Just not the actual Halloween song; you know, the one that plays every time Michael Myers comes on screen? Yeah, that’s my sister’s ringtone every October. Well, it’s between that and Rob Zombie’s wife screaming bloody murder.

Yes, the Darkside runs in the family.

Speaking of… NINETEEN (yes, 19) years ago today, I gave birth to my oldest son. His due date was actually the 30th and I may have secretly been hoping for a Halloween delivery, but I’m glad that didn’t happen, because he got to wear the cutest black cat infant costume for his first Halloween party – at 6 days old. Hey, you gotta start ’em young! 🎃

So, in honor of my eldest’s birthday today, I have chosen one of his favorite movie songs of all time: “Cry, Little Sister” by Gerard McMann from The Lost Boys soundtrack. As I mentioned before, he totally takes after me when it comes to music and likewise, movies.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BUD, Love ya!!! ❤️

#RocktoberMusicFest ♪ “How Soon Is Now” – The Craft Soundtrack

We’re in the homestretch now, Halloween is officially one week away today, so let’s make it count –  like with the theme song from Charmed! This is one of the most covered songs in rock history, having various reincarnations spanning different genres. One of my favorite renditions was done by the former Russian band, Tatu. I love when female artists can remake songs generally sung by male artists and have it turn out great, and I personally think the instrumental portion of their version is the best.

In honor of my Halloween Playlist countdown, this cover of “How Soon Is Now” comes from The Craft soundtrack, which was performed by the band Love Spit Love.

Fun Fact: Fairuza Balk, who played the very disturbed bad witch, Nancy, in The Craft had first played Mildred, the underdog good witch, in the 1986 movie The Worst Witch starring Tim Curry. She also played Dorothy in Return to Oz in 1985. Being the super nerd that I am, I watched both of those movies on repeat as a kid, so recognized her instantly when I saw The Craft. Anyone else?

Enjoy!

#RocktoberMusicFest ♪ “Dance With the Devil” – Breaking Benjamin

For this last week or so of the month, I’m going to be posting songs you might find on a rocker’s Halloween Playlist. Most of them are from movies you’d watch during this spooky time of year. I don’t care for slasher/horror films, myself – but if there’s one thing that can scare the hell out of me it’s horror movies with a religious theme. Blame it on the early influence of an Irish Catholic grandma. Omen, The Exorcist, Rosemary’s BabyThe Prophecy, etc. have all left memorable, if not unfavorable impressions. Yet, while those movies are designed to terrify, I do enjoy religious movies full of action and suspense like Devil’s Advocate, Constantine, Stigmata (my personal favorite), and Legion.

Legion was a bit underrated in my opinion for having so many big name actors in it, but that’s probably because it was more of a mash up between The Seventh Sign and 30 Days of Night with killer angels, rather than an in-depth story with complex characters. Still, if you’ve never seen it, it’s worth watching at least once. The trailer can be found here.

I couldn’t go an entire month of rock without sharing one of my all-time-ever favorite bands, Breaking Benjamin – and fortunately for me, they have hundreds of songs to choose from, because I post about them A LOT. 😀 Though BB has tracks for both video games (Halo 2) and other movies (Surrogates, Hellboy, The Conjuring, etc.) – their song “Dance With The Devil” cannot be found on any soundtrack anywhere. Which sucks, because it would be perfect for so many movies. Lucky for us, a fan out there put the music to scenes from Legion, which is awesome – I was getting tired of watching the Devil’s Advocate one, and unfortunately BB never made an official video for this song. There should be some rule against that…

Enjoy!

Ode to Samhain

Samhain Harvest’s done
The reaper’s lot
Time to share what our work begot

Pumpkins round, gourds aplenty
Carve big eyes and toothy grins
Transform them all to childhood friends

Tart apples for caramel, red for dunking
String them up for the plucking
Between our teeth, they taste so sweet
Sticky chins are worth the treat!

Haystacks, cornstalks, leaves that crunch
Scarecrows droop in crops foregone
While blackbirds herald Full Moon’s light
upon their shoulder’s wooden might

We dance by fire to celebrate,
Winter’s store and Autumn’s fate
Then tucker in, we steel ‘gainst night
To hear the tales by candlelight
Of ghostly ghouls and witch’s flight

Nothing holds this enticing wonder
When veils are weak and spirits’ drawn
Alighting feet, inspiring songs
In our memories, it’s immortalized
A single night we’ll forever prize!
