Anne-Marie

Anne-Marie

I confess, I’m always on the look out for new British artists to fall in love with, but I wasn’t on the hunt when I found Anne-Marie. I love Sean Paul and hadn’t heard anything new from him in forever, so when I saw his name tagged to this music video by Clean Bandit, of course I had to watch it! The song, “Rockabye” also featured Anne-Marie, who’d I’d never heard of before and whom I never in a million years would’ve pegged as being British. She has a very Island sound and style – Bahamian, not British Isles.

A little research turned up that she wasn’t new to the music scene at all, but had done quite a bit with the English band, Rudimental, prior to going solo for a second time – and having it pay off in major ways. Along with all of her hit singles, she also toured with Ed Sheeran, so you can only imagine the kind of exposure that brought her. They have a list of behind the scenes videos from that tour that are definitely worth a watch – quite entertaining!

I couldn’t choose a video for this post, but instead found a live performance of Anne-Marie that covers three of my favorite songs by her – which is why I’ve included this preamble, rather than lyrics. I also included a hilarious video of her calling a list of fans who won a contest surrounding the release of her hit single, “Alarm.” Enjoy! 🙂

Fun little fact I just learned. My favorite song by Anne-Marie is “Karate” and according to Wikipedia, she has not only been practicing Shotokan since she was little, she’s won a handful of Gold and Silver medals in a few major Karate competitions. Talk about being multi-talented! #Respect

Breakdown

by Seether

The sun is gone and the flowers rot
Words are spaces between us
And I should’ve been drown in the rivers I’ve found of token lost
And I should’ve been down when you made me insecure

So break me down if it makes you feel right
And hate me now if it keeps you alright
You can break me down if it takes all your might
’cause I’m so much more than meets the eye

And I’m the one you can never trust
’cause wounds are ways to reveal us
And yeah I could have tried and devoted my life to both of us
But what a waste of my time when the world we have is yours

So break me down if it makes you feel right
And hate me now if it keeps you alright
You can break me down if it takes all your might
’cause I’m so much more than all your lies

Hate me, break me down
(So break me down)
Down
(So break me down)
So break me down if it makes you feel right
And hate me now if it keeps you alright
You can break me down if it takes all your might
’cause I’m so much more than meets the eye

Not exactly their best video, but still one of my favorite songs. Every few years, they put out a hit single that really nabs me and this was definitely one of them. Plus, they’re awesome in concert. 😀

Already a Seether fan? What was the first song you ever heard by them? You can find mine HERE. Another great self-reflecting song by them is Fine Again. Check it out, the video is a lot more inspired, at least!

Contagious

by Trapt

I was sick of restrictions, sick of the boundaries
About to close the door
Such a lack of conviction, no real connection
What should I settle for?
But you caught my attention, you built on the tension
You left me wanting more
Now I don’t know what to do with myself, do with myself
I don’t want nobody else

I let you in, I let you in, and you infected me
Can’t get enough of you
Can’t get enough of you
I breathed you in, I breathed you in, and now I’m in too deep
Don’t think I’m pulling through
Don’t think I’m pulling through
Can’t get enough of you
(Can’t get enough of you)

You’re so contagious
Running through my veins
You’re so contagious
Hanging onto every word
You’re so contagious
And I can’t get away
You’re so contagious
And now I know for sure there is no cure

I saw your intentions, I gave you permission
Go ahead and start the war
I was out of addictions, by my own admission
Oh, I’ve been keeping score
But you made an exception, you taught me a lesson
Who cares where we’ve been before?
You would never leave me all by myself, all by myself
You don’t want nobody else

I let you in, I let you in, and you infected me
Can’t get enough of you
Can’t get enough of you
I breathed you in, I breathed you in, and now I’m in too deep
Don’t think I’m pulling through
Don’t think I’m pulling through
Can’t get enough of you
(Can’t get enough of you)

You’re so contagious
Running through my veins
You’re so contagious
Hanging onto every word
You’re so contagious
And I can’t get away
You’re so contagious
And now I know for sure there is no cure

I am burning in your fire (there is no cure)
I have only one desire (there is no cure)
Now I don’t know what to do with myself, do with myself (I can not deny her) (there is no cure)
Now I don’t know what to do with myself, do with myself
I don’t want nobody else

I let you in, I let you in, and you infected me
Can’t get enough of you
Can’t get enough of you
I breathed you in, I breathed you in, and now I’m in too deep
Don’t think I’m pulling through
Don’t think I’m pulling through
Can’t get enough of you
(Can’t get enough of you)
Can’t get enough of you!

You’re so contagious
Running through my veins
you’re so contagious
Hanging onto every word
You’re so contagious
And I can’t get away
You’re so contagious
And now I know for sure there is no cure

You keep running, you keep running, you keep running through my veins [x4]
(You’re so contagious, there is no cure, you’re so contagious)

Hmmm… have no idea why I’m thinking of songs with words like boundaries, restrictions and permission… Oh, right. Camp NaNo’s coming up & I’ll be working with Master Felix and his little fox again. 😉 😛 Enjoy!

Lindsey Stirling

I don’t usually preamble my music videos, but this one has no lyrics. Lindsey Stirling got her start on America’s Got Talent and is now one of the most popular “Hip-Hop Violinists” in the world. Like Apocalyptica and Clean Bandit, she’s known for teaming up with singers, but she also creates her own albums. I’ve included two videos this go round. One is Lindsey with the famous a Capella group Pentatonix doing a cover of “Radioactive” by Imagine Dragons. The other video is called “Crystallize” and is a Lindsey Stirling Dubstep original (and my personal favorite). Enjoy. 🙂

P.S. 95% of Lindsey’s videos and live performances are Steampunk, which makes me love her even more. And yes, she really moves around that much live, too! Check out her videos on YouTube, there’s a LOT to choose from.

A Kiss To Build A Dream On

by Louis Armstrong

Give me a kiss to build a dream on,
And my imagination will thrive upon that kiss.
Sweetheart, I ask no more than this:
A kiss to build a dream on.

Give me a kiss before you leave me,
And my imagination will feed my hungry heart.
Leave me one thing before we part,
A kiss to build a dream on.

When I’m alone with my fancies, I’ll be with you,
Weaving romances, making believe they’re true.

Oh, Give me your lips for just a moment,
And my imagination will make that moment live.
Give me what you alone can give,
A kiss to build a dream on!

When I’m alone with my fancies, I’ll be with you,
Weaving romances, making believe they’re true.

Oh, Give me your lips for just a moment,
And my imagination will make that moment live.
Oh, Give me what you alone can give,
A kiss to build a dream on!

In celebration of the Release of Hearthstone Alpha this week, I wanted to feature a song that makes an appearance in a rather endearing scene in the book. I tend to incorporate my favorite songs into my writing like most authors reference their favorite books, I can’t help it. Enjoy! 😉

*Note: This is not a real collaboration, but it should be! The video was brilliantly, seamlessly created from two different live performances of the same song. If anyone knows where a petition can be signed to get these two artists to do an actual duet, please let me know!

Stay

by: Rihanna / Cover by: Thirty seconds to Mars

All along it was a fever
A cold sweat hot-headed believer
I threw my hands in the air, said, “Show me something,”
(S)He said, “If you dare, come a little closer.”

Round and around and around and around we go
Oh now, tell me now, tell me now, tell me now you know

Not really sure how to feel about it
Something in the way you move
Makes me feel like I can’t live without you
It takes me all the way
I want you to stay

It’s not much of a life you’re living
It’s not just something you take, it’s given

Round and around and around and around we go
Oh now, tell me now, tell me now, tell me now you know

Not really sure how to feel about it
Something in the way you move
Makes me feel like I can’t live without you
Yeah, it takes me all the way
I want you to stay

Ooh, ooh, ooh, the reason I hold on
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ’cause I need this hole gone
Funny you’re the broken one but I’m the only one who needed saving
‘Cause when you never see the light it’s hard to know which one of us is caving

Not really sure how to feel about it
Something in the way you move
Makes me feel like I can’t live without you
Yeah, it takes me all the way
I want you to stay, stay
I want you to stay, oooh

I’ve already shared my love for Thirty Seconds To Mars, but even I was a little skeptical that Jared wasn’t using some kind of special mic for this performance – Nope. Every single “live” performance he does of this song sounds that freaking good. He’s just that superfantastically talented. I shall never doubt you again, Mr. J! 😉 hehe, get it?

Moving on – I really wanted to talk about Rihanna in this post. I have a lot of her songs in my music library. I think she’s so beautiful all around and has not only a spectacular voice, but her own voice – and that’s even more remarkable. I’ve been a fan since S.O.S., but in all honesty, I love all of the things she’s done since ditching that initial personae and showing the world the real Rihanna. Yeah, the ‘Good Girl Gone Bad’ one!

On top of being a Guinness Book of World Records breaker and having the ability to sing with anyone, Rihanna was named the 2017 Harvard University Humanitarian of the Year for her Clara Lionel Foundation (named after her grandparents) which, quoted from the site is: “Teachers and students, advocates and allies, reaching across borders to fight together for basic rights to education and health.” The foundation is most known for all they’ve accomplished for health centers, hospitals and educational programs in Rihanna’s home country of Barbados.

Though it’s hard to choose favorites, this is my most listened to Rihanna solo and this is my most listened to collaboration – though it was a tossup with this one.

What’s your most worn out Rihanna track?

Broken Pieces

by: Apocalyptica ft. Lacey Sturm (formerly of Flyleaf)

Too late – this is not the answer
I need to pack it in
I can’t pull your heart together with just my voice alone
One thousand shards of glass I came to meet you in
You cut the peace out of me

And as you ripped it all apart,
That’s when I turned to watch you
And as the light in you went dark
I saw you turn to shadow
If you would salvage some part of you that once knew love
But I’m losing this
And I’m losing you

Oh I’ve gotta turn and run
From faces that you never see
Oh I’ve gotta save my blood
From all that you’ve broken
And pack up these pieces of me

It’s too late now to stop the process
This was your choice – you let it in
This double life you lead is eating you up from within
A thousand shards of glass you pushed beneath my skin
And left me lying there to bleed

And as you showed me your scars
I only held you closer
But as the light in you went dark I saw you turn over
I wanted always to be there for you and close to you
But I’m losing this
And I’m losing you

Oh I’ve gotta turn and run
From faces that you never see
Oh I’ve gotta save my blood
From all that you’ve broken
And pack up these pieces of me

The broken pieces
Pack up these pieces of me
The broken pieces
Pack up these pieces

Maybe without me
You’ll return to all the beauty I once knew
But if I stay I know,
We will both be drowned by you holding onto me

Oh I’ve gotta turn and run
From faces that you never see
Oh I’ve gotta save my blood
From all that you’ve broken
And pack up these pieces of me

The broken pieces
Pack up these pieces of me
The broken pieces
Pack up these pieces of me

I apologize for the poor quality of this video, it was the only full-length one I could find on YouTube.

I do not own any rights to this song, video or lyrics. All rights remain with the artists and their respective agents. No copyright infringement intended.

This is actually the last of a set of 3 videos meant to be watched in order, but it’s my favorite. If you’d like to watch them in order, #1 is “End of Me” ft. Gavin Rossdale (Bush), and #2 is “Strong Enough” ft. Brent Smith (Shinedown).

Apocalyptica is classified as a “Cello Metal” band, hailing from Helsinki, Finland. Up until 2014 they didn’t have a vocalist, rather they used their classically trained cellist skills and love for heavy metal to create a ‘neoclassical metal’ sound, while teaming up with some of rock’s most beloved singers for their songs. They are extremely popular and have sold over 4 million albums since their start in 1993.

Their chart-topping songs here in the U.S. include “I Don’t Care” ft. Adam Gontier, formally of Three Days Grace, and “I’m Not Jesus” ft. Corey Taylor of Slipknot. They’ve also performed with the famous Berlin band, Rammstein. (Go ahead and sing Du hast, you know you wanna…) 😉
