Title: Born, Darkly (Darkly, Madly Duet: Book 1)
Author: Trisha Wolfe
Genre: Psychological / Serial Killer / Suspense / Erotic
Rating: 5 ‘s

This book is currently free on Amazon and its Duet is only 99¢ – I feel like I need to track the author down and pay her for letting me read her books.

Trisha Wolfe’s writing style gives my eyeballs the feels. The beautiful, poetic construction of each sentence is an experience like no other. It triggers feelings of happiness and wonder, even while reading the graphic details of a serial killer’s gruesome crime scene. Since there’s no way for me to compare, I will just plainly state: READ THIS BOOK!!!

I loved everything about it and can’t find a single negative thing to say about it. It’s a masterpiece. I don’t want to have spoilers, but if you enjoy psychological thrillers, dark erotica and really intense puzzles, you won’t be able to put this book down. You can’t get ahead of it. You can’t outpace the unraveling of the traps. You will be at the mercy of the author in every possible way. Everything is exactly as it seems, yet nothing is anything at all what you think. This is a labyrinth of psychological suspense without reprieve, a twisted game played between a serial killer and a psychologist. For all intents and purposes, one is imprisoned and the other is free, but which of them really has all the liberty to keep the upper hand?

Grayson Sullivan is the Angel of Maine. A moniker his fans have given him for his victimology. The pedophiles, rapists and child abusers he meticulously devises intricate traps to ensnare, so he can spend hours watching them suffer, waiting for them to make their choice: Live or die? They never choose to live. His IQ is off the charts, his madness always has a reason, his foresight is boundless, yet he’s been caught and is now being tied to crimes in Delaware, where they’ve overturned the ban on the Death Penalty just for him.

Dr. London Noble is renowned in her field, the criminal psychologist everyone wants in their corner when it comes to defending the criminally insane. A tragic car accident as a teen has left her with suppressed memories and a damaged lumbar she suffers from more than she lets on. She’s beginning to feel the wear of her contract with the prison. She wants to be done with the criminals and move on already, until the Warden brings her the Angel of Maine. A serial killer she tried to get an interview with a year ago, when he first got caught and several times thereafter. He always turned her down. Now he’s in her office, because he’s going to be put to death if he’s convicted. She’s his only hope and he’s the case study that could propel her career into the stars, never to be knocked down again.

Their connection is visceral and twisted, moths and flames of equal parts. A gravitational pull into a sick game of cat and mouse neither can escape. They both seek to exploit the other for their own desired end game, but when it comes to psychological warfare, just which mind lays the greatest traps and which has the greater chance of surviving them: A brilliant serial killer adept at building puzzles out of nothing or a seasoned criminal psychologist with a dark and bloody past?

Reader-to-Reader warnings: This is not a vigilante romance. No killers in this book try to justify their actions. This book is not black and white with its content, there are no clearly defined heroes or villains, it is all a matter of individual perspective and opinion. If you need a definitive good vs evil tale, this is not the book for you.

Title: Never On a Sunday (A Steamy Menage Story)
Series: Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
Author: Tara Crescent
Genre: Erotic Romance BDSM
Rating: 4/5 ‘s

This book was an absolute delight! Okay, it was a naughty, sizzling, sexy delight! For a short read, I was taken by surprise. At first, I thought it was going to be just one sex scene after another without any substance, but that is not the case! It starts off fast, but trust me… you’re going to want to keep reading.

Stephanie Rice is a smart, independent woman and professed sex addict who knows exactly what she wants. She likes so many different things, she’s found a different man to fulfill each kinky piece of her. Six of them to be exact. One for each day of the week, except Sunday – that’s laundry day.

Mark, the Chef likes to play with his food before he eats. Thomas, the Technician makes fucking machines and other kinky gadgets. Wade, the Playboy is Stephanie’s exact male counterpart (only, the rich version). Trent, the Buttman… well, that’s self-explanatory. Felipe, the Doctor is not, but he sure likes to play one – and Stuart, the (ahem, cliché billionaire – Stephanie’s words, not mine) Dominant keeps her tied up most Saturday evenings.

What would happen, though, if all her men happened to meet and decide that Stephanie needs six sexy reasons to skip the laundromat on Sunday?

This book is a quick read, yet still finds time to dig deeper into each of the characters and even Stephanie’s BFF roommate, Sasha. Fans of safe sex in books will also appreciate this story. I really liked that each man is so different, yet every single last one genuinely cares about Stephanie and treats her amazingly. Likewise, Stephanie was a very easy character to like, which can be rare these days with female leads in short novellas.

This is a lighthearted, angst & drama free read that had me smiling all of the way through. I highly recommend it!

My Review ♥ Uncivilized by: Sawyer Bennett!

**Warning: This book is a wild, sexy beast of a read. 18+**

Savage man, loner, warrior… I am dangerous at my core. I have lived amidst the untamed wild of the rainforest, in a society that reveres me and where every woman falls before me in subjugation.

Now I’ve been discovered. Forced to return to a world that I have forgotten about and to a culture that is only vaguely familiar to my senses.

Dr. Moira Reed is an anthropologist who has been hired to help me transition back into modern society. It’s her job to smooth away my rough edges… to teach me how to navigate properly through this new life of mine. She wants to tame me.

She’ll never win.

I am wild, free and raw, and the only thing I want from the beautiful Moira Reed is to fuck her into submission.

She wants it, I am certain.

I will give it to her soon.

Yes, very soon, I will become the teacher and she will become my student. And when I am finished showing her body pleasure like no other, she’ll know what it feels like to be claimed by an uncivilized man.

Title: Uncivilized
Series: None (but she just released Love: Uncivilized, a follow up novella)
Author: Sawyer Bennett
Genre: Erotic Romance
Rating: 4 ‘s

Uncivilized was super hot, but also had a lot of heart. It touches on the very real issues of deforestation in the Amazon, which is forcing the remaining indigenous peoples to acclimate to modern society, whether they want to or not – and highlights some of the ways, we as a modern people, have completely lost touch with what it means to really live, with all of our senses and our bodies, every day, rather than being numbed by convenience, lack of true freedom and luxury.

The differences between the two worlds are a constant, super sexy, debate amongst the main characters. I really loved that they always came across as a team, no matter what situation they were thrown into, or what outside influences tried to intervene. I was afraid the plot may get predictable, but it never did. I do feel it dragged a bit in places, particularly during the ‘flashbacks’ and felt that a lot of the redundant information could have been completely cut out without harming the story at all.

Zacharias Easton is the son of missionaries who died in the Amazon jungles when he was only seven years old. For eighteen years, he’s been raised amongst the Caraican Indian tribe, completely primitive in all ways. He is revered by his tribe as a great hunter, has Tukaba completely submitted to him and loves his adoptive father dearly. The last thing he wants is to leave the only home he’s ever known with the flame-haired woman he hates more than anything else, despite his undeniable attraction to her.

Dr. Moira Reed is an anthropologist that specializes in the study of Amazonian Indians who attempt to acclimate in the modern world. When Randall Cannon contacts her with a remarkable story about his long-lost godson, Zach, she can’t resist the opportunity. Unfortunately, the career boost isn’t the only thing she finds impossible to resist, when she discovers that Zach is a man of primal instincts, animal magnetism and deadly precision. When she learns that no matter how many clothes, books or utensils he learns to use, nothing will ever change the fact that he is completely, erotically, beautifully uncivilized.

Title: Brie Learns The Art of Submission
Series: Submissive Training Center (Brie #1) Collection
Author: Red Phoenix
Genre: Erotic BDSM Romance
Rating: 5 ‘s

I’m still shaking from reading this book… in all the best ways! I was given the first novella for free and was hooked right away. I didn’t hesitate a second to purchase the collection, because I never wanted to stop reading it. (I’m currently starting the After Graduation collection). I’m a new fan of Red Phoenix and plan to start cyber-stalking her properly asap. Now, to begin much like the main protagonist, Brie, with a little uncertainty…

First, I have to preamble this a bit, only because I wouldn’t want any negative notes to keep anyone from reading this series – Please, read the books! – There is very little I didn’t like about the story, but notably two things threw me off. One, based solely on the modern-day, realistic setting the story is set in and how detailed the application process was, I was unpleasantly stunned at how quickly things got intimate and physical at the Training Center with no regard to safe sex or birth control issues, when all of the other emotional/health issues were so thoroughly and beautifully explained, though I also understand that on some level, as well. Two, I found the dissension between the trainers unsettling, not only because they’re all Dom/Domme’s, but professionals and as such should never have displayed their conflicts in front of their students – on the flip side, it added a constant level of tension and necessary insights for the rest of the storyline, while reminding the reader that Dom/Domme’s are really just people, too, and make mistakes, so after my initial reaction, I decided that it worked out magically.

My biggest praise of this collection is that the author highlighted far more positive aspects about the BDSM lifestyle than the inevitable negatives. I found it very refreshing from the handful of other novels I’ve read of the same type. My second biggest praise is the characters. They were so rich and stayed so true to themselves, even as they grew or came to change their initial mindsets, they never left me feeling like they’d been suddenly replaced by a stand-in. The remarkable detailing of the countless facets of the BDSM lifestyle was so captivating, not to mention the smoking hot D/s scenes you never have to wait long to be right in the middle of! I enjoyed the extensive diversity of scenarios Brie and her peers experienced and even their in-depth, non-physical educational lessons with Mr. Gallant.

I can’t wait to continue sharing in their growth outside of the Training Center and fear my sleep might be suffer for it more than it should! I definitely recommend this collection to anyone, whether you’re a fan of BDSM erotica or not – you will fall in love with the characters and the easy way in which the author’s style allows you to completely escape into their world.

Titles: The Invitation, Surrender  & Release
Series: The Invitation Series
Author: Roxy Sloane
Genre: Erotic Romance / BDSM
Rating: 5 HOT ‘s for the whole series!

I don’t even know where to begin… this trilogy was so super SEXY fantastic that I couldn’t put it down. I gobbled up all three books in less than 48 hours! Ash Pierce is my new #1 book boyfriend of all time.

I’ve never read a first person POV that reads as smoothly as a third person POV, but Roxy Sloane has mega style and her characters are off the charts!

Justine is bold, sexy and driven. She’s the kind of girl other women secretly envy, because she’s never afraid to take a dare. There’s only one person on Earth that can intimidate her in any way…

Ash is HAWT, there’s just no two ways about it. It’s not even his looks, it’s his dirty, vulgar mouth, dominate nature and complete intuitiveness into every woman’s real secret fantasy, not just what they’re willing to admit.

I had some minor issues with the way Justine handled or reacted to certain problems with Ash. Especially, considering that she was a lawyer and knew on every level that there are always two sides to a story, she never once waited to hear Ash’s side before having a major meltdown and automatically assuming he was lying and/or in the wrong. It didn’t seem there was enough trust built up between them for such an epic, passionate romance to blossom, yet with all of the other aspects it definitely managed to work.

Despite that issue, I still loved Justine just as much as Ash and Keely. The fast pace of the storyline was perfectly balanced with the panty-dropping sex scenes and unbelievably erotic mystery that built up most of the plot – and never failed to deliver! All in all, I gave the whole trilogy five stars and will undoubtedly be re-reading it at least a million times. If you’ve never read Roxy Sloane, prepare to fall in love with her devious writing style and larger-than-life characters, first and foremost… then prepare to take a LOT of cold showers (or stock up on some serious battery power!)

My Review ♥ Dying For A Living by: Kory M. Shrum!

On the morning before her 67th death, it is business as usual for Jesse Sullivan: meet with the mortician, counsel soon-to-be-dead clients, and have coffee while reading the latest regeneration theory. Jesse dies for a living, literally. As a Necronite, she is one of the population’s rare 2% who can serve as a death replacement agent, dying so others don’t have to. Although each death is different, the result is the same: a life is saved, and Jesse resurrects days later with sore muscles, new scars, and another hole in her memory.

But when Jesse is murdered and becomes the sole suspect in a federal investigation, more than her freedom and sanity are at stake. She must catch the killer herself—or die trying.

Title: Dying For A Living
Series: Jesse Sullivan Series
Author: Kory M. Shrum
Genre: Paranormal/Futuristic/Mystery with some Romantic elements & a whole lot of Snark!
Rating: 4 ‘s

I was offered the chance to read this book for free by the wonderful author, herself, Kory M. Shrum, so the least I could do was give it a rave review!

I finished this book in less than 2 days, because I couldn’t put it down. It’s far too action-packed to ignore and like the main protagonist, I really wanted to know the answers. The entire concept of the storyline was new, which was intriguing enough, but the author went a step above and gave it raw edges of realism packed with a lot of humor.

Jesse Sullivan is the main protagonist, a Necronite (don’t call her a zombie) who has no brain-to-mouth filter, whatsoever! Often times, that made for some pretty hilarious dialogue. I loathe First Person POV, I just need to state that. It tends to keep the main character in a perpetual state of immaturity that aggravates me to no end, which is why I feel it should be reserved only for YA. That did prove true in some areas of this book. There were a few scenes that turned me off to the woman who’s head I was stuck inside of, and made me want to reach into the pages and smack some sense into her. The bright side, was that it seemed to be purposely done, rather than an unfortunate byproduct and I got to see some maturity taking hold as the story progressed. It also allowed me to discover things at the same time as Jesse, which is probably why that POV was chosen. It definitely kept the suspense level at an all-time high.

The love triangle between Jesse, Ally and Lane is captivating, as well, adding a nice balance to all of the action. It reminds me a little of Lost Girl, and how a heart really can be torn in two different directions while the emotions remain sincere, rather than forced or tainted. It will be interesting to see how that progresses in the rest of the series. The mystery surrounding Gabriel has truly got me hooked. The deliberate shroud of the unknown the author kept him in throughout the story, only allowing small glimpses, was very clever and effective bait.

All in all, the combination of a fresh, new kind of science fiction, familiar supernatural elements and blatant realism was very alluring. Add to that the blunt, descriptive dialogue that edged the genre of erotica without actually jumping the line makes pinning Dying For A Living down into any one category impossible. It’s an experience that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys fast-paced action, a not-so-perfect heroine, a lot of snarky comebacks, a genuine cast of supporting characters and endless suspense that makes you want to rush out and buy the second book.

And I’d like to thank the author, Kory, for the opportunity to read it!

Every time she closes her eyes, he’s there…waiting for her.

Working night shift at a mental hospital was never Brandi Connelly’s dream job, but in order to pay her grandmother’s medical bills she’s willing to do whatever she has to. Her new job seems like a piece of cake, there is only one thing keeping her from enjoying it – Draken Barrand, a patient.

Thoughts of her patient haunt her night and day and she’s too embarrassed to tell anyone about the strange dreams she’s having about him. Partly because she’s afraid they will think she’s crazy…mostly because the things that go on while she’s sleeping make her blush.

As the nightly visions become all too real she’s afraid they’re not dreams at all. If these nightly fantasies are real, that means everything her dream lover has told her is real, which means that the little mating ritual she so excitedly participated in was real. Soon she will change into a demon and there’s nothing she can do about it.

Claimed and marked, she now belongs to a creature of the night. There’s just one upside to this – he’s trapped behind the walls of a mental institution. That means she has time to figure out a way to stop the change… well, she would’ve had time, if her mate hadn’t broken out of his cell.

He’s tired of being alone.

Draken Barrand is determined to claim his mate. There’s just one problem – he’s unlawfully trapped behind the walls of a mental institution. The only way he can reach her is through her dreams, where he claims her and marks her as his own. But his mate’s life is threatened when the Leader of his Legion finds out about his unlawful mating.

Will Draken be able to break free of his cell in time to save his woman? If he does, will she finally accept him as the man of her dreams and her reality?

Her Dream Lover - Teaser 1

Her Dream Lover - Teaser 2

“Brandi Connelly, I fear you have stolen my heart right from my chest.” He was so close to her she could feel his breath on her lips. “From this day forward I will never be the same.”

Neither would she. With her eyes still closed Brandi felt a lone tear escape from her eyes and travel down her cheek.

Draken wiped it away. “I am yours forever,” he whispered and he sounded so sincere.

Opening her eyes she stared up at him while he caressed her cheek and stared down at her with an expression of amazement on his face.

“Wish I’d found you sooner,” he told her. “Before I became the broken being I am today.”

Though his demon couldn’t fully emerge, Draken still pulled back and stared down at his woman. She blinked up at him. The lust she felt showed in her expression. He wanted to satisfy her, wanted to slate her lust then tease her body until it returned.

“Why did you stop? I didn’t want you to stop.”

Both man and beast growled with pleasure. She didn’t want him to stop. Her confession made his confidence soar. It was a miracle he hadn’t scared her away with his inexperience. If he did it right, maybe she wouldn’t notice that this was his first time.

Taking a deep breath, he silently begged his beast to be patient. There was something he wanted to do to her, something he’d dreamed of doing since he first smelled her scent. He would do it now, before he lost the nerve.

“Lie down on the pillows,” he told her. “I want to taste the rest of you.”

Title: Her Dream Lover
Series: The Darkest Legion
Author: Siren Allen
Genre: Erotic Romance / Paranormal
Rating: 4 ‘s

If you’re a fan of demons, you’re going to love this book! A word of advice: skip the glossary. It was a thoughtful gesture, but the author explained everything so well in the story, it was unnecessary. All of the characters were fleshed out nicely, offering a variety of good, bad and evil to look forward to learning more about in the rest of the series. My personal favorite sub-character is: [insert drum-roll] Rage. He’s definitely the comic relief in the plot, and quite good at it!  Now, on to the details…

Draken Barrand has been imprisoned in a special cell inside of the Lakefield Mental Hospital for ten years. The only problem is he isn’t ‘criminally insane,’ as his file would suggest. He’s half-demon. His only crime was being a threat to his uncle’s position as the Leader of the Legion. After losing his father to murder, he’s content to spend his time in a drug-induced stasis, where he doesn’t have to feel anything… until he smells his mate. For the first time in a decade, his demon stirs and refuses to be subdued again. Weakened by the specific metals of his cage, the only thing Draken can do is call out to his mate telepathically and remember what it is to be a Dream Chaser.

To say Brandi Connelly had a horrible childhood is the understatement of the century, but thanks to her grandma she’d managed to grow into a fairly decent adult. And adults have to pay bills. That was the only reason why she applied for a job at the Lakefield Hospital, because her history with hearing voices soon resurfaces, reminding her that a mental institution… probably not the smartest place for her to be. Especially, when she meets the only patient kept in the basement. Mr. Barrand is nine kinds of crazy, and ten kinds of hot. Every time she closes her eyes, he’s right there with her, making her fall for him by being the perfect dream lover. Unfortunately, their sleepy-time rendezvous are so vivid, Brandi starts wondering if it’s her own loneliness making it difficult to separate fantasy from reality… or if something far more sinister is at play?

There was a lot of repetitive information that could have been completely cut out, without ruining the story a single bit, because that was simply amazing! The plot is unique and kept me reading the whole way through. It touched on all my fave’s: Great dialogue, snarky comebacks, witty banter, macabre, actual villains, sweet romance, and some wickedly hot erotica that even crept into super-extra naughty a few times!

Both Draken and Brandi have their moments where you absolutely love them, and then they have their moments where you wish you could reach into the pages and strangle them. A few times, I had to stop and remind myself that, as much as I wish she wouldn’t, Brandi was reacting exactly like any normal, sane human being would react – and trust me, Draken sometimes deserved it!  In the end, I felt satisfied with the characters’ developments and I can’t wait to see where the next book takes them!

Her Dream Lover - Teaser 3CHARACTER BIOS

Draken Barrand:

Trapped in a mental institution, Draken has never experienced the outside world. There’s been no first kiss for him, no first job, no first crush. The poor demon hasn’t even tasted chocolate before. All of that changes when he meets Brandi. With new sensations coursing through his body, he’s determined to claim her. First, he has to break out of the psych ward. Second, he has to learn to calm his inner beast. Both man and beast want a taste of Brandi. They refuse to let an annoying thing like cell bars and demonic rules keep them away from her.

Brandi Connelly:

Curvy with a hint of sass, Brandi has spent most of her life hiding in the shadows. Picked on as a kid because she was a little heavier than the popular girls, Brandi believed she would never meet a man who would appreciate her, curves and all. To her surprise, she finds that and more in Draken Barrand. Too bad he’s a patient in the psych ward. Oh yeah, and he’s a demon. Go figure. Did I mention she’s his mate?

Josphe Barrand:

He’s the Leader of the Legion. He doesn’t have time for love, friends or even family. The only thing on his mind is getting the job done. He’s willing to kill to make sure he achieves his goal. The only thing in his way is his cousin Draken and Draken’s new mate. But they won’t be in his way for long. Killing them will be easy. Or so he thinks…

Review ♥ Sapphire Beautiful by: Ren Monterrey

Title: Sapphire Beautiful
Series: The Club Series (#4)
Author: Ren Monterrey
Genre: Erotic Romance
Rating: 3.5 ‘s

Without a doubt, my favorite part about Sapphire Beautiful was the character of Dante.  He’s everything most male protagonists aren’t.  Too young, too quiet, too scrawny, too not that alpha male – and yet, he is.  He makes nerdy and introverted hot.  He makes inexperienced and awkward endearingly sexy.  And he definitely has an alpha streak that shines through at all the right moments!

Dr. Mary Pine is trying to recover from the nightmare her husband left her in, after his entire Anthropology Department was slammed with a sex scandal which led to him taking his own life.  Not only did he leave her shamed, mortified and heartsick, but with a whole lot of debt.  On the verge of losing her house, Mary learns about The Club, a place that conducts ‘arrangements’ for wealthy men to find exclusive ‘girlfriends.’  Girlfriends they ‘gift’ a monthly payment to and it’s way more than Mary makes as a Professor of Medieval History.  It’s enough to save her house, so she can focus on getting tenured and on with her life.  Preparing herself to become the mistress of an older, wealthy man was her first mistake…

Dante McNally is the epitome of ‘the black sheep,’ especially where his wealthy, snobby family is concerned.  Dark haired where they’re light. Introverted and introspective, where they’re boisterous and vain.  His grandfather was the only one who ever cared about him, leaving him the sole beneficiary in his will.  Now, Dante’s a 22 year old multi-millionaire, with no desire to spend a penny on anything accept a woman that would be his and his, alone.  When he discovers that they share a love for Medieval History, for Dante Alighieri and The Divine Comedy in particular, Dante knows he will do anything to keep Mary.  He’ll pay off her mortgage, he’ll pay her more money a month, but he will never end their arrangement, because he fears it’s the only thing keeping her by his side.

Trouble comes in so many different packages for Mary and Dante, but the biggest one is when Dante ends up being the new graduate research fellow for the Department of Medieval History after they already have an arrangement in place.  It was bad enough to discover she’s ten years Dante’s senior, quite another to find herself in a situation far too similar to the sex scandal her late husband had been charged with!

Hot sneaky antics will ensue, mixed with family and work drama stirring up a whole lot of demons from both their pasts, all trying to thwart the reluctant romance blossoming beyond their control.  There were some good twists, and there were predictable twists.  Some of Mary’s choices and reactions left me scratching my head, but I enjoyed following her and Dante’s story and would recommend this entire series (I went back and read The Club Series #1-#3) to anyone looking for something a little outside the norm.

My Review

Title: The Burning
Author: Susan Squires
Genre: Paranormal Historical Erotic Romance
Rating: 4.5 ‘s

Ah, to be reacquainted with my first true love! The Burning was both a unique and a nostalgic read for me, taking me back to my teenage years where I first fell for the allure of the lone, brooding vampire.  Not to mention, anyone who’s ever read Bram Stoker’s Dracula will absolutely appreciate the details the author merely alludes to – just enough – to have your mind wandering down familiar connections.  Susan Squires has no problem transporting her readers to another time and place with the perfect amount of detail, authentic dialect and an exquisite vocabulary.  Most importantly, she knows how to keep the plot revving up and up, so you’re constantly on the edge of your seat!

This story has a well-rounded, fully-fleshed-out cast of characters ready to be loved, hated or just felt sorry for.  Truly, the main characters were a blessing.  I loved Ann Van Helsing like I haven’t loved a female protagonist in a very, very long time!  She was an absolute joy to spend time with, watch flourish and follow through all of her trials and victories.  Stephan Sincai… what can I say?  He is not your typical vampire.  In fact, I found him refreshingly accepting of his immortal needs. Yet, he bears all of the hallmarks of the classic, Victorian undead we’ve come to know and love.  Despite being born a vampire, rather than turned into one, the author still found a way to make him struggle with eternal damnation, guilt, humanity and the quest for atonement.

The Burning is a true Victorian era novel in the respect that it’s full of inescapable feelings of constriction, oppression, frustration, loneliness, betrayal and utter helplessness that often feels too heavy to wade through.  This has always been a double-edged sword for me as a reader and reminds me of why I no longer rush out to buy this particular time-period book.  On one hand I loathe the stifling negativity, yet on the other hand, it’s the very essence that gives those plot points such an impact.  Regardless, the author really nailed the Victorian era down pat, especially in the lack of freedom and choices women, particularly well-bred women, had during that time.  I did find the constant interruption of flashbacks quite daunting, though.  One or two would’ve been understandable, but if there’s that much backstory to tell, I feel it should have its own section, so it can be read in its entirety, rather than continuously disrupting the energy of the present plot.

In short, I would highly recommend The Burning to any reader.  Susan Squires seamlessly introduces a unique, paranormal element into a spot-on historical and never shies away from the graphic details, whether it’s carnal, horrific or the facts of daily life in the 1800’s, the combination offers a suspenseful, erotic romance with political fringes and the intensity of a thriller all wrapped up into one amazing story.  It’s one of those rare jewels sure to stick with you long after you’ve finished reading!

The Burning - Full Wrap

They ran their hands over his body. There were three of them. Their palms rubbed his chest, his hips and thighs, and the bulge of his biceps where his wrists were bound above his head. The nails scraped lightly, threatening. He knew what was to come. The stone bench on which he lay was hard against the bare flesh of his buttocks and shoulders, but the room was warm. They loved heat. It was a true luxury in the winter of the Carpathian Mountains. The only illumination came from the fire licking at the logs in the great stone arches. Above him, their faces hung, unreal in the flickering light. Their eyes glowed red. Now they would compel him. Their low moans filled the little room cut into the rocky heart of the monastery. He knew every crevice in its stone by now. This room held his torment and possibly his salvation.

“Test him well, tonight, sisters,” one of them whispered. Her breasts brushed his belly.

“Is he worthy of our father’s trust?” another breathed into his ear.

He felt his loins throb, tight with a need he dared not indulge. He had no idea whether they compelled that need, or whether it belonged to him. A tongue found his nipple. He could not help but arch up into it. The chains clanked. A hand cupped his balls. He felt the scrape of canines at his throat. They wanted blood tonight. He waited for the pain. How would he bear their ministrations in the long hours ahead?

You deserve this, he told himself. A thousand years of torment would not atone for your crimes. You have one chance at redemption and they will help you to it.

He breathed as they had taught him. He focused inward, searching for an island of control. His shoulders relaxed. All emotion drained slowly away. The piercing of his carotid was a fact of pain, no more. One of them sucked at his throat while the others kept him roused.

But now he was ready for whatever they might do to him. He would become what was required. No matter the cost, he would atone.

“You’re pretty good at handling the media,” Alex mused once we’d taken our seats inside the cinema. “You sure know how to put them in their place. I think that was the most effortless set of interviews I’ve ever had.”

“I have a love, hate relationship with them. I don’t mind being abrupt when they overstep their mark.”

“That’s a little like us.” I had to giggle at that. “You look really beautiful tonight, Nat.”

“Maybe you should keep your eyes on the stage instead of on me.” I smirked, brushing of his comment while we watched the director and main leads take the stage. I tried to collect my thoughts, but Alex Harbour had just called me beautiful.

So many people acknowledged Alex as they wandered past us. Some stopped to congratulate him on the song for the soundtrack. I, myself, was disappointed with the song. It had a more pop feel than rock. To me, it was like he’d sold out on this track. It wasn’t the real him.

My mouth fell open when Adam Rider came over and had a quick chat with us. He was ‘the’ Hollywood actor at the moment, and gazing up at him, I could see why. The man was almost as sexy as Alex, with his dark, almost black hair, deep chocolate eyes and sexy irish accent. He wore a tux just as well, too.
“When are you going to take that jump into the film industry, Alex?” he asked, darting his eyes toward me.

“That’s never going to happen, Adam. Music is my love. We’ve had this conversation before.”

“And who is this? I don’t think we’ve been introduced.” Adam held my gaze, the same way Alex did the first time I met him. Celebrities of their caliber always had that effect on me, knocking me breathless with their beauty. It was a surreal moment to realize they were real people, not just a perfect face in a magazine or on TV.

“I…I…I’m Natasha White,” I stuttered, taking his hand when he offered it to me.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Natasha,” he cooed, kissing the back of my hand. Hollywood actors…were they all this smooth? “I’m not used to seeing Alex with such a sophisticated woman.” Now I was blushing.

“Natasha is my new personal assistant.” Alex’s tone was sharp as he shot daggers at Adam. “You better take your seat, Adam. It looks like they’re going to start.”

“I need to find my date anyway. Good talking with you, Alex. Natasha.” Gracefully, he disappeared into the crowd in search of his seat.

“Wow,” I gasped, holding my chest. “I just met Adam Rider.”

“Are you a fan of his?” Alex didn’t seem that interested in my answer. He was busy playing with the arm of his chair.

“Who isn’t a fan of his? I heard he turned down the lead role in this film we’re seeing tonight.”
“I wouldn’t know, but I’m not sure Westerns are his thing anyway.”

“Do you see him a lot? Are you good friends with him?”

“Straight Lace, do you have a crush on Mr. Hollywood? I do know him pretty well. We jam together from time to time.” He couldn’t hide his smirk. “Most actors are womanizers, though, and Adam is no different. I wouldn’t get mixed up with him.”

“I’ve heard that about rock stars, too,” I quipped. “And you definitely live up to that.”

“Maybe you need to find a more reliable source. You really don’t know me well enough to make that judgement yet.”

My Review

Title: Wonderlust
Author: B.L. Wilde
Genre: Erotic Romance
Rating: 3.5 ‘s

The best part about this entire book, was the lack of sugar-coating. B.L. Wilde’s characters are exposed in all of their tragic, messed up, jealous, lying, cheating, short-fused, sarcastic, drug and alcohol abusing glory. If you want a book about fantasy, this is not it. If you want a book guaranteed to irk, delight and surprise you with raw edges and realism, then hop right in!

Wonderlust is truly a character driven plot, complete with awesome sub-characters. The tumultuous mood swings were a little daunting at times, but I couldn’t stop reading. I appreciated having to work for the slow, awkward growth that some of the characters went through, rather than just being handed a cookie-cutter Hero and Heroine. I would’ve liked to have seen more of that growth from the main character, herself, especially regarding her habit of running away from her problems. I felt she could be immaturely short-tempered and unaccountably dishonest, though I never stopped rooting for her. She’s otherwise a strong woman with heart, who doesn’t sacrifice who she is against some pretty tough obstacles, and that was admirable.

Natasha White is trying to distance herself from a four-year fling with her boss, David, when he chooses to get engaged to someone else. Taking on the position of Alex Harbour’s new Personal Assistant has her fleeing London for sunny L.A. The problem? She’s had a crush on the former front man of Steel Roses since she was twelve and in less than ten seconds, he brings all of her adolescent daydreams crashing to the ground by being the epitome of the entitled, egotistical, womanizing Rock Star.

Alex Harbour has scars so deep, some of them aren’t even revealed in the book. He’s gorgeous, addicted, arrogant and far from charming. Yet, underneath all the trappings of Rock Stardom that he uses as a shield, is a man desperate for more than what life has been throwing his way. He needs someone to tell him no, to give him boundaries and give back just as good as he dishes out – on every level. The problem? He’s been safeguarding his heart for so long, he has no clue how to win a woman over without falling back on his depraved, wickedly destructive ways.

It’s simply best to accept right now, that you’re going to love Alex Harbour, even when you hate him. You’re going to experience emotions most romance novels never cover, like disgust, disappointment, a new-found, really strong dislike for supermodels, and gob-smacking “WHY DID YOU DO THAT?!” moments. Final thoughts: I hope some of the things left unfinished here find closure in the coming books, because if the rest of Steel Roses is anything like Alex Harbour, I think I’m in danger of becoming a groupie.
