#SongLyricSunday ♫ “Guts Over Fear” – Eminem ft. Sia

Your eyes are working just fine, that really does say Eminem. Yes, I – rocker girl – am really an eclectic listener of music. I actually created a meme for this instance right here:

This weeks theme is: A Song That References Another Band

I have always been a fan of Eminem, which doesn’t surprise the people who really know me, because he’s like the Deadpool of music. #nuffsaid. But every once in awhile, he creates some pretty inspirational songs and this is one of them. Eminem is notorious for burning other bands/artists in his songs so severely, it actually ends their careers. In his defense – these people usually bring it on themselves by being dumb enough to target him first. And whether you like his music or not, Marshall Mathers is the king of lyrical manipulation and roasting – buuuuut, I didn’t want to go there. He has a slew of ‘dig songs’ to choose from, and while this one doesn’t necessarily escape that category with his mention of “AZ and Nas”, it’s more of a roast on himself than the other artists. Plus, I just genuinely like this song and the meaning behind the lyrics.

My favorite line is: “No wonder I had to unlearn everything my brain was taught” – because we learn our opinions of ourselves from others, whether we want to or not. When so many people say the same thing, we start believing it, and unlearning it can be the hardest thing in the world to do.

Australian superstar, Sia isn’t just a featured singer on this track, but one of its songwriters. She is quite famous for never showing her face on stage or screen, so America’s Next Top Model contender, Chantelle Brown-Young (now known as Winnie Harlow) plays her part in the music video. Chantelle suffers from the skin/pigment lightening condition known as Vitiligo, yet she fought for her modeling career by having ‘guts over fear’, making her the perfect choice for this video.

I wouldn’t expect anyone to listen to an artist they don’t like – but this is not the Eminem you’re thinking of, if you don’t like his usual lyrics. This song is about struggling to move onto the next chapter or remain relevant when everything you’ve ever known is no longer working for you, when you feel trapped in a ‘rut’ with no way out, and it doesn’t feel like you have a single supporter in your corner. It’s about shutting those voices out, the loudest one being your own, and combating the fear to accomplish your dreams.

And yes, it’s explicit. Deadpool of music, remember? 😀 Enjoy!

Feels like a close, it’s coming to
Fuck am I gonna do?
It’s too late to start over
This is the only thing I, thing I know

Sometimes I feel like all I ever do is
Find different ways to word the same, old song
Ever since I came along
From the day the song called “Hi! My Name Is” dropped
Started thinking my name was fault
‘Cause anytime things went wrong
I was the one who they would blame it on
The media made me the equivalent of a modern-day Genghis Khan
Tried to argue it was only entertainment, dawg
Gangsta? Naw, courageous balls
Had to change my style, they said I’m way too soft
And I sound like AZ and Nas, out came the claws
And the fangs been out since then
But up until the instant that I’ve been against it
It was ingrained in me that I wouldn’t amount to a shitstain I thought
No wonder I had to unlearn everything my brain was taught
Do I really belong in this game? I pondered
I just wanna play my part, should I make waves or not?
So back and forth in my brain the tug of war wages on
And I don’t wanna seem ungrateful or disrespect the artform I was raised upon
But sometimes you gotta take a loss
And have people rub it in your face before you get made pissed off
And keep pluggin’, it’s your only outlet
And your only outfit so you know they gonna talk about it
Better find a way to counter it quick and make it, ah
Feel like I’ve already said this a kabillion eighty times
How many times can I say the same thing different ways that rhyme?
What I really wanna say is, is there anyone else that can relate to my story?
Bet you feel the same way I felt when I was in the same place you are
I was afraid to

I was afraid to make a single sound
Afraid I will never find a way out, out, out
Afraid I never before
I didn’t wanna go another round
An angry man’s power will shut you up
Trip wires fill this house with tip-toe love
Run out of excuses with every word
So here I am and I will not run

Guts over fear, (The time is here)
Guts over fear, (I shall not tear)
For all the times I let you push me around
And let you keep me down
(Now I got) Guts over fear, guts over fear

Feels like a close, it’s coming to
Fuck am I gonna do?
It’s too late to start over
This is the only thing I, thing I know

I know what it was like, I was there once, single parents
Hate your appearance, did you struggle to find your place in this world?
And the pain spawns all the anger on
But it wasn’t until I put the pain in songs learned who to aim it on
That I made a spark, started to spit hard as shit
Learned how to harness it while the reins were off
And there was a lot of bizarre shit, but the crazy part
Was soon as I stopped saying “I gave a fuck”
Haters started to appreciate my art
And it just breaks my heart to look at all the pain I’ve caused
But what am I gonna do when the rage is gone?
And the lights go out in the trailer park?
And the window that was closing and there’s nowhere else I can go with flows in
And I’m frozen cause there’s no more emotion for me to pull from
Just a bunch of playful songs that I made for fun
So to the break of dawn here I go recycling the same, old song
But I’d rather make “Not Afraid 2” than making another mothafuckin’ “We Made You” uh
Now I don’t wanna seem indulgent when I discuss my lows and my highs
My demise and my uprise, pray to God
I just opened enough eyes later on
Gave you the supplies and the tools to hopefully use it to make you strong
And enough to lift yourself up when you feel like I felt
‘Cause I can’t explain to y’all how dang exhausted my legs felt
Just having to balance my damn self
But on eggshells I was made to walk
But thank you, ma, ’cause that gave me the
Strength to cause Shady-mania, so many empty that stadium
At least I made it out of that house and a found a place in this world when the day was done
So this is for every kid who all’s they ever did was dreamt that one day just getting accepted
I represent him or her, anyone similar, you are the reason that I made this song
Everything you’re scared to say don’t be afraid to say no more
From this day on forward, just let them a-holes talk
Take it with a grain of salt and eat their fucking faces off
The legend of the angry blonde lives on through you when I’m gone
And to think I was gone
I was afraid to

I was afraid to make a single sound
Afraid I will never find a way out, out, out
Afraid I never before
I didn’t wanna go another round
An angry man’s power will shut you up
Trip wires fill this house with tip-toe love
Run out of excuses with every word
So here I am and I will not run

Guts over fear, (The time is here)
Guts over fear, (I shall not tear)
For all the times I let you push me around
And let you keep me down
(Now I got) Guts over fear, guts over fear

#SongLyricSunday ♪ “Candle In The Wind” – Elton John

It’s time for another #SLS challenge. If you’re just tuning in, the weekly music event can be found on Jim’s blog, A Unique Title For Me, where he lists the rules and upcoming themes. Check it out by clicking the theme link below.

This week’s theme is: A song That Includes Someone Famous In It

I’ve loved “Candle In The Wind” since I was a little girl. It was my original favorite Elton John song. And one of those kind of songs that captivated me, even when I was too young to really know what it was about – the emotion, the melody, they called to me – then when I was old enough to actually understand the lyrics, I fell in love with it all over again.

I’m sure I won’t be the only one to pick this one, but I don’t mind. I can’t think of a better song to share than this masterpiece, sung by the grand master, himself. Enjoy!

Goodbye Norma Jean
Though I never knew you at all
You had the grace to hold yourself
While those around you crawled

They crawled out of the woodwork
And they whispered into your brain
They set you on the treadmill
And they made you change your name

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to
When the rain set in

And I would have liked to have known you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend ever did

Loneliness was tough
The toughest role you ever played
Hollywood created a superstar
And pain was the price you paid

Even when you died
Oh the press still hounded you
All the papers had to say
Was that Marilyn was found in the nude

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to
When the rain set in

And I would have liked to have known you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend ever did

Goodbye Norma Jean
Though I never knew you at all
You had the grace to hold yourself
While those around you crawled

Goodbye Norma Jean
From the young man in the twenty second row
Who sees you as something more than sexual
More than just our Marilyn Monroe

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to
When the rain set in

And I would have liked to have known you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend ever did

Your candle burned out long before
Your legend ever did

#SongLyricSunday ♫ “If I Had A Heart” – Fever Ray – THC’s “Vikings”

Last weekend, I had my post all created and ready to go for the movie song challenge (Working 9 to 5 by Dolly Parton) and then I completely forgot to schedule it. 😦 Oh, well. I guess I will find a reason to post it another time!

This week’s theme is: A Song Featured Prominently in a TV Show

I already wrote an AMAZING post for “Carry On My Wayward Son” by Kansas featuring a live performance by the band at Comicon during #RocktoberMusicFest that you can check out here. I’m a huge Supernatural fan, so of course that’s always the first song that comes to mind when I think about TV shows, but I try to keep from posting repeats if I can help it.

So, my pick for today is “If I Had A heart” by Fever Ray, which is the opening theme song for The History Channel’s most popular show ever: Vikings. Any Vikings fans can hear this song from a mile away, just the first few notes, and will instantly channel their inner Viking, probably by shouting “Skol” or some other Scandinavian word they’ve picked up from the series. Of course “A Song of Ice and Fire” is exactly the same for Game of Thrones fans (“Dracarys” even has its own clothing line), but unfortunately, there are no lyrics to that popular intro song – otherwise, I’d have chosen it, instead.

I have included both the official music video and a video clip of the show’s intro, just because I can and I wanted to. 😀 I’m still trying to get caught up on Vikings so no spoilers in the comments, please – I was a late viewer to the series. Make sure you stop by Jim’s blog, A Unique Title For Me to check out all of the song picks for today. Enjoy!

This will never end 'cause I want more
More, give me more
Give me more

This will never end 'cause I want more
More, give me more
Give me more

If I had a heart I could love you
If I had a voice I would sing
After the night when I wake up
I'll see what tomorrow brings

Ah ah, ah ah
Ah ah, ah ah
Ah ah, ah ah

If I had a voice, I would sing

Dangling feet from window frame
Will I ever ever reach the floor?
More, give me more, give me more

Crushed and filled with all I found
Underneath and inside Just to come around
More, give me more, give me more

Ah ah, ah ah
Ah ah, ah ah
Ah ah, ah ah

If I had a voice, I would sing

#SongLyricSunday ♪ “Break In” – Halestorm

I’m going off track a little bit with this week’s pick, because one: I couldn’t find a song about weddings that I liked that hasn’t be done a million times over, and two: I’ve never been married, so…I’ve chosen a song that I would want to qualify as my wedding song if I ever did get married (very big if). Frankly, I couldn’t imagine marrying someone who didn’t fit this song, so I guess that’s the real reason why it’s my pick.

In case you haven’t guessed, this week’s theme is: Wedding / Marriage / Diamond / Ring / Cake

I almost picked Rihana’s cover of “Diamonds” by Sia, one of my favorite covers, but despite the very beautiful lyrics, there’s something equally sad about it and I think it’s really about a lost love, so not something you’d want to think about on your wedding day! (well..most people, anyway.) My second runner up was “Black Wedding” by In This Moment ft. Rob Halford of Judas Priest, but that might only qualify for an Addams Family wedding. 😉

The first time I ever heard “Break In” was the very video pasted below. I was checking YouTube for some good Halestorm songs to add to my playlist, when I came across this gem: Lzzy Hale singing with Amy Lee of Evanescence? Hecks, yeah! It’s amazing how well these two women of rock sound together live – though not at all surprising. The camera work could be better, but the sound is perfection. Enjoy! (p.s. I love how Lzzy uses a shout out to the audience to slyly wipe a bug off her arm lol)

Put your lighter in the air and lead me back home
When it's all said and done I'll follow the echoes
I hear you night after night calling out my name
And I find myself running to meet you

I didn't want to escape
From the bricks that are laid down

You are the only one
The only that sees me
Trusts me and believes me

You are the only one
The only one that knows me
And in the dark you show me

Yeah, it's perfectly reckless
Damn, you leave me defenseless
So break in
Break in

You let me fall apart without letting go
Then you pick up the pieces and you make me whole

I didn't want to escape
From the bricks that are laid down

You are the only one
The only that sees me
Trusts me and believes me

You are the only one
The only one that knows me
And in the dark you show me

Yeah, it's perfectly reckless
Damn, you leave me defenseless

So break in
And take everything I have
Until there is nothing left
Until it's just your voice in my head
And when the lights come on
You see me as I am
You're still inside me

You are the only one
The only that sees me
Trusts me and believes me

You are the only one
The only one that knows me
And in the dark you show me

Yeah, it's perfectly reckless
Damn, you leave me defenseless
So break in
Break in

Put your lighter in the air and lead me back home

#SongLyricSunday ♫ “Voodoo” – Godsmack

This song is actually listed as a “hidden” track on Godsmack’s debut album and was one that catapulted them to popularity on all of the rock channels in the 90’s – go figure, a pagan themed song gaining popularity during the era of Goth? Noooo… Okay, all sarcasm aside, this song is still a fan favorite and whether you like the content or not, the sound is hauntingly catchy and among those you might find yourself humming out of the blue while doing housework…or you know, burning candles.

This week’s theme follows the Chinese Zodiac list of animals: Rat/Ox/Tiger/Rabbit/Dragon/Snake/Horse/Sheep/Monkey/ Rooster/Dog/Pig

Since I already used Alice in Chains’s “Rooster” during Rocktoberfest and have never been a big fan of the Beastie Boys, despite actually liking “Brass Monkey” – I’ve decided to go with a Me themed song since I was born in the year of the Snake. Too bad that doesn’t grant me with the ability to speak Parseltongue. Maaaaan!

Make sure to stop by Jim’s blog, A Unique Title For Me to check out all of the other song picks for today. Enjoy!

I'm not the one who's so far away
When I feel the snake bite enter my veins
Never did I want to be here again
And I don't remember why I came

Candles raise my desire
Why I'm so far away
No more meaning to my life
No more reason to stay
Freezing feeling, breathe in, breathe in
I'm coming back again

I'm not the one who's so far away
When I feel the snake bite enter my veins
Never did I want to be here again
And I don't remember why I came

Hazing clouds rain on my head
Empty thoughts fill my ears
Find my shade by the moonlight
Why my thoughts aren't so clear
Demons dreaming, breathe in, breathe in
I'm coming back again

I'm not the one who's so far away
When I feel the snake bite enter my veins
Never did I want to be here again
And I don't remember why I came

I'm not the one who's so far away
When I feel the snake bite enter my veins
Never did I want to be here again
And I don't remember why I came

Voodoo, voodoo, voodoo, voodoo

I'm not the one who's so far away
When I feel the snake bite enter my veins
Never did I want to be here again
And I don't remember why I came

I'm not the one who's so far away
When I feel the snake bite enter my veins
Never did I want to be here again
And I don't remember why I came

Voodoo, voodoo, voodoo, voodoo
Voodoo, voodoo, voodoo, voodoo

So far away

#SongLyricSunday ♫ “Beauty In the Beast” – Gavin Rossdale

Am I the only one blown away by the fact that it’s already time for Daylights Savings again? Ugh. I think all the states in the same time zone should have the same practices, therefore I vote that we jump on board with Arizona and put an end to the nonsense! While I’m waiting for that to [never] happen, you should hop on over to Jim’s blog, A Unique Title For Me, to check out all of the song picks for today!

This week’s theme is: Animal

Soooooo many choices! But I already posted at least 3 of my favorite animal themed songs during #Rocktoberfest and didn’t want to do a repeat this soon. Def Leopard’s “Animal” is my ALL TIME favorite for this theme – but also “Mouth” from the American Werewolf in Paris soundtrack and “Rooster” by Alice In Chains. I came really close to choosing Maroon 5’s “Animals”, simply because I love it and I love Adam Levine and why not watch him get naked? (Don’t laugh, that was a serious question.) And while the video is quite disturbing in so many ways, it’s also not, because Behati Prinsloo is his wife in real life, so is it really stalking? LOL

Mostly, I just didn’t pick it, because there’s a good chance someone else will and I prefer to broaden musical horizons with songs people are less likely to already know about. This song is off Gavin Rossdale’s 2008 solo album Wanderlust, which is a hint to the musical style used for the tracks. This isn’t “Bush” style grunge rock, it’s altogether different. You’ll have to decide for yourself, but for me, the whole album makes me want to write an epic, futuristic and most likely dystopian tale. Enjoy!

In the heart of the city,
I'm awake now,
I'm in the buzz, open to the night.
You're the libertine.
You're philistine
When I first saw you,
I knew I was done.

You are the fuel again,
You, I arise
Feeling invincible, this moment's mine.

Strangest landscapes,
See the sky flip inside out,
Turning nightmares into dreams that bring you around.
There's danger in the street,
That's the beauty in the beast.
There's danger in the street,
That's the beauty in the beast.

In the blink of an eye,
You seem to get me.
You are my fox, but I can't see your lie
I am the wheel,
Another on my heart,
I know this road goes back to the start

You are the fuel again,
You, I rise
Feeling invincible this moment's mine

Strangest landscapes,
See the sky flip inside out,
Turning nightmares into dreams that bring you around.
There's danger in the street,
That's the beauty in the beast.
There's danger in the street,
That's the beauty in the beast.

Yellow moon works while everyone's asleep.
Sometimes what you want is just out of reach.

Strangest landscapes,
See the sky flip inside out,
Turning nightmares into dreams that bring you around.
There's danger in the street,
That's the beauty in the beast.
There's danger in the street,
That's the beauty in the beast.

Strangest landscapes,
How you make me come around
Turning nightmares into dreams that bring you around
There's danger in the street [Repeat: x 5]
(Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh)
That's the beauty in the beast

#SongLyricSunday ♫ “Running Up That Hill” – Placebo

placebo

Daybreakers was one of the best vampire films ever made. If you’ve never seen it, you’re missing out. Imagine, the world is completely run by vampires going about their 9-5 jobs every night, just trying to survive, pay their bills and put food on the table, while their corrupt government is hiding the drastic blood shortage to avoid mass panic, and simultaneously covering up the rabid vampire epidemic steadily growing worse – plus sending military-op style hunting parties out to track down the few remaining humans on the planet that have managed to escape capture and are undoubtedly planning a revolution.

O_o I’ll let you draw your own conclusion on where the writer was going with all those parallels. In the meantime, don’t forget to stop by Jim’s blog, A Unique Title For Me, to join in the fun or check out all of the other song picks for today!

This week’s theme is: Hill / Mountain

Although, this is a cover, I’ve never heard the original by Kate Bush. The Daybreakers soundtrack turned this Placebo version into an instant success, but I’m not familiar with the band or any of their other songs. It’s never too late to start, I suppose. 😀 Enjoy!

It doesn’t hurt me
You want to feel how it feels
You want to know? Know that it doesn’t hurt me
You want to hear about the deal I’m making?

You…
(If I only could, be running up that hill)
You and me…
(If I only could, be running up that hill)

And if I only could
Make a deal with God
And get him to swap our places
Be running up that road
Be running up that hill
Be running up that building
If I only could, ooh

You don’t want to hurt me
But see how deep the bullet lies
Unaware that I’m tearing you asunder
And there’s a thunder in our hearts, baby
So much hate for the ones we love
Tell me we both matter, don’t we?

You…
(If I only could, be running up that hill)
You and me…
(If I only could, be running up that hill)
You and me won’t be unhappy

And if I only could
Make a deal with God
And get him to swap our places
Be running up that road
Be running up that hill
Be running up that building
If I only could, ooh…

C’mon, baby, c’mon darling
Let me steal this moment from you now
C’mon, angel, c’mon, c’mon, darling
Let’s exchange the experience, ooh

And if I only could
Make a deal with God
And get him to swap our places
Be running up that road
Be running up that hill
With no problems

And if I only could
Make a deal with God
And get him to swap our places
Be running up that road
Be running up that hill
With no problems

(If I only could, be running up that hill…)
