#SongLyricSunday | “Reincarnate” – Motionless In White

Happy Spooktacular Sunday, ya’ll! 😀 It’s #SLS time again, so make sure you follow the theme link below to Jim’s blog, A Unique Title For Me, to check out today’s picks!

This week’s theme is: Lean | Sit | Stand

In the spirit of the upcoming All Hallow’s Eve, my pick this week was just as much for the lyrics as for the video. It’s 100% Halloween cinema-worthy. Plus, I just really like keeping everyone on their toes – Which genre will she pick this week? 😀 Released in 2014, “Reincarnate” is the title song of MIW’s album by the same name – the 3rd and final record under their original label, Fearless Records. Lead Singer, Chris Motionless, was quoted in an interview stating that they knew the album would be the one to make or break their band, so they decided to say “f**k it” and do it exactly the way they wanted to, not for anyone else. Turns out, that approach really paid off, as they’ve released 5 albums since and seem to gain more popularity with each new hit release.

Personally, Motionless In White is my favorite male screamo-gothic-metal band and those who follow me on Instagram and Twitter already know that I have a major crush on their lead guitarist, Ryan Sitkowski…

…and that he’s the inspiration behind the main antagonistic anti-hero/hero in my psychological romance WIP. But all that great reason aside, I like MIW mostly because their lyrics, while often brutally honest to the point of cynical about the world/society/people, are pretty spot on. They’re the perfect band to get me in the right mood when I need to tap into some raw, angry, defiant, or confrontational energy for one of my characters or scenes. While it would never stop me from listening to them, I’m glad Chris Motionless has come into more of his own look now, rather than this Marilyn Manson version. Enjoy!

Content Warning: Explicit language in parts. (Especially, in the funniest line of the whole song)

Get up

You pull the trigger just for fun
Forgetting I’m a loaded gun
So hate me for the things I’ve done
And not for what I’ve now become

I want this
I need this
I love it

Crawling from hell
Fallen from grace
And there is nothing left to take
Leaving the past to the grave
So we can reincarnate

You sit upon your throne of filth
Condemning what you haven’t built
So hate me cause you’re standing still
Watching while I shoot to kill

I live this
I breathe this
You crave it

Crawling from hell
Fallen from grace
And there is nothing left to take
Leaving the past to the grave
So we can reincarnate

There’s one thing you forget
You can’t make me play dead
I’ve swallowed your bullshit
No respect
You make me fucking sick

Give me a reason

I won’t bite my tongue
I am not afraid spineless
A dominion of nothing is all you will reign
You laugh but what did you create?
Bitch you give a fucking aspirin a headache

Through hell
From grace
There’s nothing left

Crawling from hell
Fallen from grace
There’s nothing left for you to take
Driving the nail through my mistakes
So we can reincarnate

When we lie down, we’re sore and sick
We fall down, sink or swim
Underground
The remedy for who we are
And what lies beneath

Reincarnate

#SongLyricSunday | Pass Out – Tinie Tempah

Thanks for the challenge this week, Jim! Wow, I never thought it would be so hard to find a song for any challenge, but this one almost got me. Normally, the most difficult task is choosing one song out of many – not today! I was lucky I could find one at all. Okay… I was lucky I could find one that wasn’t yet another country & western song, cuz let’s face it…Trucks? Yeahhhh…

This week’s theme is: Bus / Truck / Lorry

My choice for this week is from my favorite British rapper, Tinie Tempah. Ever since “Written In The Stars” hit the U.S. airwaves way back when, I’ve been a big fan. He frequently collabs with other artists, having multiple tracks with singers like Ellie Goulding, Wiz Khalifa, and 2 Chainz just to name a few. In a total fangirl way, I still think he’s hot and has a sexy as-sin voice (not to mention the accent!)–even if he is a “cheeky bastard” as he says. So, there’s the truth of that. LOL

Update: Had to change the video because the original one kept switching itself to different videos and would even go as far as being different for each viewer/device, so…this one is censored and static. Sorry.

It’s okay, I’m good
Let’s go

Yeah, yeah, we bring the stars out
We bring the women and the cars and the cards out
Let’s have a toast, a celebration, get a glass out
And we can do this until we pass out

Let it rain, let it pour away
We won’t come down
Until we hit the ground and pass out

Yeah, I’m in charge now
I’m a star and I brought my fuckin’ cast out
I live a very, very, very wild lifestyle
Heidi and Audrina eat your heart out

I used to listen to “you don’t wanna bring arms house”
I got so many clothes, I keep some in my aunt’s house
Disturbing London baby, we about to branch out
Soon I’ll be the king like Prince Charles child

Yeah, yeah and there ain’t nobody fresher
Semester to semester, ravin’ with the freshers
20 light bulbs around my table on my dresser
ClC Kompressor, just in case that don’t impress her

Say hello to Dexter, say hello to uncle Fester
Got them gazing at my necklace and my crazy sun protectors
G-shocks, I got a crazy thumb collection
Haters, I can’t fuckin’ hear your reception

Yeah, yeah, we bring the stars out
We bring the women and the cars and the cards out
Let’s have a toast, a celebration, get a glass out
And we can do this until we pass out

Let it rain, let it pour away
We won’t come down
Until we hit the ground and pass out

Yeah, this shit was meant to last me 24 hours man
OK

Yeah, they say hello, they say hola, and they say bonjour
I’m pissed, I never got to fly on a Concord
I been Southampton but I’ve never been to Scunthorpe
I’m fuckin’ crazy with the kicks, call me Jean-Claude

I’m ’bout to be a bigger star than my mum thought
‘Cause every day I got a groupie at my front door
Now I drive past the bus I used to run for
Where’s my fucking clap, where’s my encore?

I walk alone ’cause I was born alone
I chirps her just for fun, I’ll never ever call her phone
I’ll leave her in the club, I’ll never ever walk her home
DL the fuckin’ foundation, I’m the cornerstone

I’m pretty famous, I’m sorta known
And if your son doesn’t, I bet your daughter knows
Check out my visual, check out my audio
Extraordinary, yo, hope you enjoy the show

Yeah, yeah, we bring the stars out
We bring the women and the cars and the cards out
Let’s have a toast, a celebration, get a glass out
And we can do this until we pass out

Let it rain, let it pour away
We won’t come down
Until we hit the ground and pass out

Whoa, whoa

Uh, look at me, I been a cheeky bastard, man and
Look at all the drama we started, now I’m
In here layin’ on my back
Sayin’ DJ, won’t ya gimme one more track?

Let it rain, let it pour away
We won’t come down
Until we hit the ground and pass out

Let it rain, let it pour away
We won’t come down
Until we hit the ground and pass out

Pass out

#SongLyricSunday | Orphan Train – Lee Ann Womack

It’s time for #SLS again, so hop on over to Jim’s blog, A Unique Title For Me, by clicking on the theme link below. There you’ll find the rules for taking part and you can check out all of the other song choices for today!

This week’s theme is: Train Songs

I almost picked Journey’s iconic “Don’t Stop Believing,” but figured 1 or 2 (or more) #SLS peeps will probably post it. Then, I considered Ozzy’s “Crazy Train” because who doesn’t love that song??? But, you all know me, I prefer songs less likely to get picked by others. So, I have chosen an old favorite of mine from back when I was listening to C&W on a regular basis.

The moment I heard this song on Lee Ann’s album, I fell in love. It gave me goosebumps all over. Even if you don’t like country music, the lyrics are worth a read. I’m sure the song can be interpreted in more than one way, some might even find it sad if you take it too deep, but I’ve always taken it as a metaphor for human equality. Embracing the fact that we’re all human beings. Shed your status, your heritage, and your circumstances, and you’re exactly the same as the person beside you. I love that message. Enjoy!

Come all you brokenhearted, come and lay your burden down
Come kings and queens, come royalty, surrender up your crown
Come empty-handed, come with nothing of your own to claim
Come naked, poor, come like a child to ride the orphan train

Come ride, ride on the orphan train
Put your ear to the track, you can hear your name
Come ride, ride on the orphan train, it’ll take you all the way home

The way is narrow, it is steep that brings you to the door
But love awaits there to embrace your heart forevermore

Come ride, ride on the orphan train
Put your ear to the track, you can hear your name
Come ride, ride on the orphan train, it’ll take you all the way home

♫ ♪ ♫ ♪ ♫ ♪ ♫

Come you abandoned, you forsaken
Friendless and alone, come refugees left homesick for
Some place you’ve never known
Here princes, paupers, criminals, and saints are all the same
No more or less than God’s beloved child aboard this train

Come ride, ride on the orphan train
Put your ear to the track, you can hear your name
Come ride, ride on the orphan train, it’ll take you all the way home

Ride, ride on the orphan train
Put your ear to the track, you can hear your name

#SongLyricSunday ♫ A Special Event Post

I normally don’t do this – and I apologize, Jim! – I know everyone’s time is precious and there are a lot of songs to listen to by all of the other participants (click theme link below to check those out). But as some of you are reading this, I’m getting ready to take my oldest son to his first concert ever. It’s his graduation present, and since I completely corrupted him from a young age – we both love the same kind of music! 😀 So, we’re off to the White River Amphitheater to see 5 – yes FIVE – rock bands play tonight. I really wanted to pay tribute to at least the 3 main headliners for this special event post, but you don’t have to listen to all of them. I will completely understand if you only pick one.

This week’s themes is: Clothing|Hat|Pants|Scarf|Shirt|Shoes|Tie

Soooo, I totally cheated because I wanted to include a song by the three bands and I could not find any that I’m familiar with by BB with any of the theme words (as they’re meant to be) – buuuut, the song I chose does have the word “Tie” in it, just not the kind you wear around your neck. It’s a special occasion – I get a free pass! 😀

My picks are “Tourniquet” by Breaking Benjamin, “Hats Off to the Bull” by Chevelle, and “Me Against You” by Three Days Grace. Now, old school TDG fans, this is a whole new sound from when Adam Gontier was the lead singer – but it’s still pretty good. The new lead singer is Matt Walst formerly of My Darkest Days, who I saw in concert a few years back with Bush, Papa Roach, and Nickelback. The other two bands that will be playing tonight are Dorothy and Diamante. I’m so excited!!! Okay…enjoy!

p.s. to completely understand this video you have to watch “Never Again,” “Red Cold River,” and “Torn In Two” prior to this one – in that exact order. But it’s still a good song on its own!

Take this life

I will make you
I will start the pain within
I will crave you
I will learn to hate again

I will drain you
I will make you whole again
I will blame you
I will lay beside the dead

‘Cause I don’t want to live inside this hell

Tame the fire from within
You won’t break me
Love will tie the tourniquet
And suffocate me

I won’t save you
I won’t start the hope within
I won’t change you
I won’t fight the pain within

I won’t fail you
I won’t let your light descend
I won’t play you
I won’t face your fate again

‘Cause I am born to live inside this hell

Tame the fire from within
You won’t break me
Love will tie the tourniquet
And suffocate me

Tame the fire from within
You won’t take me
Love will tie the tourniquet
And suffocate me

Let the calm rise up
So graceful
Every wasted word
So faithful

Tame the fire from within
You won’t break me
Love will tie the tourniquet
And suffocate me

Tame the fire from within
You won’t take me
Love will tie the tourniquet
And suffocate me

Suffocate me

All our needs put together
Don’t bleed on their own
You paid for an eyeful
So behold the bull
Why can’t I look up, (out in the clearing)
Tell me what’s there below, (end over end)
While he’s safe for the moment, (guess what I’m learning)
He’s never safe from the crowd, come one

So hats off to the bull
No giving up
(Either way, it makes ya mad)
(Well some of us)
Hats off to the bull, keep giving all
(What ya say we make amends)

To be monumental
Could mean the beyond
The simpler the treasure
Means the higher the cost
Well as for the ending, (damn right I’m learning)
You might ask for the door, (end over end)
Well I hate how the clouds hide
The gasps from above

So hats off to the bull

(Well some of us)
Hats off to the bull, keep giving all

#SongLyricSunday ♪ “Take It Off” – Kesha

It’s time for #SLS again and you know what that means: Hop on over to Jim’s blog, A Unique Title For Me, to listen to variety of songs for today!

This week’s theme is: Floor/House/Roof/Walls

With so many obvious options (Floyd, The Animals, etc.), I was looking for something less likely to get picked. I thought maybe a song about walls closing in, or being brokenhearted on the floor…until I came across this old gem in my library and realized that Walls and Floors don’t have to be so tragic. They can be fun and completely inappropriate! 😉

Hey, I write Erotic Romance, are you really that surprised? I have more than a few characters that could use this as their personal theme song, lol. Anyway, I am a fan of Kesha and always have been, and her old school hits were designed to get you out of your seat and moving – this one is no exception.

Fun Facts:

  • Prior to landing her own label, Kesha performed the female vocals for Flo Rida’s hit song, “Right Round,” but at the time, refused to appear in the video or take credit, claiming she wanted to make it big off of her own talent, not piggyback off of another artist.
  • Kesha‘s massive advocacy and positive impact for the LGBTQ community awarded her the Human Rights Campaign’s Visibility Award in 2016. You can watch her emotional acceptance speech here.
  • In 2010, one year after lending her vocals to “Right Round,” Kesha (then stylized as Ke$ha) catapulted to the top of the charts with her first hit single “Tik-Tok” which sold over 16.5 million copies world-wide. She was only 18 years old.
  • Kesha has three albums under her contract with RCA: “Animal” released in 2010, and “Rainbow” released in 2017 both hit #1 on the US Billboard 200, while “Warrior” released in 2012 hit #6.

Kesha’s slow fade from the spotlight wasn’t due to lack of fans or great music, but started from a legal battle with her former producer in 2014, whom she’s accused of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse on top of gender discrimination. The courts wouldn’t let her out of her contract with the label, itself. For the past several years, Kesha has fought with a confessed eating disorder and depression, and her music has evolved away from its original sound. I can’t claim to be as familiar with all of her new works, but her song “Rainbow” and “Praying” says a lot about her personal struggles. One thing I do know, the woman still has a voice and her new tracks highlight that more adequately than her old school hits.

Though this song may be deemed inappropriate, the video is just plain fun and hints at a possible “hidden message” that Kesha is outspoken about – and that’s “taking off” the facade, the shell, the image society wants you to wear and just be yourself. Enjoy!

This week’s theme is: Bird/Fly/Sky/Wing

I’m bringing the amazing singer/songwriter, Sia back into the spotlight this week and I’ll be really surprised if I’m the only one who picks her hit, “Bird Set Free.” It has all but one of the theme words in the lyrics and is just a powerful, inspirational song–as many of her hits are! I was so happy I found a live version since there’s no ‘official’ video to share. Of course, she has one of her Interpretive Dancers on stage with her, and I’m really digging the polka-dotted bow…it’s a nice break from the solid colors.

Enjoy!

Clipped wings, I was a broken thing
Had a voice, had a voice but I could not sing
You would wind me down
I struggled on the ground, oh
So lost, the line had been crossed
Had a voice, had a voice but I could not talk
You held me down
I struggle to fly now, oh

But there’s a scream inside that we all try to hide
We hold on so tight, we cannot deny
Eats us alive, oh it eats us alive, oh
Yes, there’s a scream inside that we all try to hide
We hold on so tight, but I don’t wanna die, no
I don’t wanna die, I don’t wanna die, yeah

And I don’t care if I sing off key
I find myself in my melodies
I sing for love, I sing for me
I shout it out like a bird set free
No, I don’t care if I sing off key
I find myself in my melodies
I sing for love, I sing for me
I’ll shout it out like a bird set free

I’ll shout it out like a bird set free
I’ll shout it out like a bird set free

Now I fly, hit the high notes
I have a voice, have a voice, hear me roar tonight
You held me down
But I fought back loud, oh

There’s a scream inside that we all try to hide
We hold on so tight, we cannot deny
Eats us alive, oh it eats us alive, oh

I don’t wanna die, I don’t wanna die, yeah

And I don’t care if I sing off key
I find myself in my melodies
I sing for love, I sing for me
I shout it out like a bird set free
No, I don’t care if I sing off key
I find myself in my melodies
I sing for love, I sing for me
I’ll shout it out like a bird set free
I’ll shout it out like a bird set free
I’ll shout it out like a bird set free

#SongLyricSunday ♪ “Blaze of Glory” – Jon Bon Jovi

There was a time when I was a big fan of Country & Western music. Grew up listening to the classics like Patsy Cline, Waylon Jennings, and Johnny Cash just to name a few. My grandma used to sing on the local radio station, taught all her kids how to pick a guitar. My dad still can’t read sheet music, but he’ll play you those old C&W hits acoustic, electric, steel or banjo – hell, he can even play the Ukulele.

Sometime in the early 2000’s Chris LeDoux passed away, Garth Brooks retired, Reba McEntire settled into a hit TV sitcom and the sound of country music took a turn for the pop-arena. It wasn’t difficult to let it fade out of my “new favorites” library. My radio stations got re-programmed, my two-step’s gotten a little rusty, but I still cry when Patsy sings “Crazy.” Even with the good ol’ songs to choose from, though, I couldn’t bring myself to dig into them for today’s pick. Instead, I’ve chosen a great rock song written for a 90’s western about a real-life wild west outlaw, making it about the countriest non-country song ever sung.

This week’s theme is: Cowboy/Gun/Hat/Horse/Western

Young Guns and Young Guns II are still fun to watch after all these years, with its star-packed cast, intense action, perfectly placed humor, a glimpse at Emilio Estevez’s naked arse (or maybe his body double’s?) and let’s not forget some of the most memorable movie quotes of all time. The movies had the side benefit of renewing an interest in the the old west and the legends of people like Billy the Kid, the less appreciated side affect of a bunch of teens looking to experience Peyote, and scored Jon Bon Jovi his first hit single as a solo artist.

Here are a couple of fun facts I learned on Wikipedia:

  • While many think “Wanted Dead or Alive” was also written for the Young Guns movies, it wasn’t. Emilio Estevez asked for the already released hit to be the main song on the second movie’s soundtrack, but instead, Jon Bon Jovi wrote “Blaze of Glory.”
  • Jon Bon Jovi made a cameo appearance as a prisoner in the movie Young Guns II in the scene where Chavez and Doc were in the pit.

Here are some famous quotes from the Young Guns movies:

  • “Reap the whirlwind, Sheriff Brady. Reap it!”
  • “Dog, hey dog! Did you see the size of that chicken?”
  • “Hey, Chavez, how come they ain’t killin’ us?” – “Cuz we’re in the spirit world, asshole, they can’t see us!”
  • And my personal favorite:

Now, onto the music…enjoy!

I wake up in the mornin’
And I raise my weary head
I’ve got an old coat for a pillow
And the earth was last night’s bed

A candle in the wind, yeah

You’re brought into this world
But they say you’re born in sin
Well at least they’ve given me something
I didn’t have to steal or have to win
Well, they tell me that I’m wanted

But I drew first blood
I’m no one’s son
Call me young gun

You ask about my conscience
And I offer you my soul
You ask if I’ll grow to be a wise man
Well I ask if I’ll grow old
You ask me if I’ve known love
And what if I could sing songs in the rain?
Well, I’ve seen love come
I’ve seen it shot down
I’ve seen it die in vain

Shot down in a blaze of glory
(Down)
Take me now but know the truth
But I’m going down in a blaze of glory
(Down)
Lord, I never drew first
But I drew first blood
I’m a devil’s son
Call me young gun

Each night I go to bed
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
No, I ain’t lookin’ for forgiveness
But before I’m six foot deep
Lord, I got to ask a favor
And I hope you’ll understand
‘Cause I’ve lived life to the fullest
Let this boy die like a man
Starin’ down the bullet
Let me make my final stand
