#SongLyricSunday | Blinding Lights – The Weeknd

It’s #SLS time again – hosted by Jim over at A Unique Title For Me. Make sure to click on the theme link below to hit his page and see all the other song picks for today!

This week’s theme is: Touch | Feel

This song covers both theme options, and just happens to be one of my new favorite songs by The Weeknd because of its nostalgic ’80s sound. I’m sharing an audio video, rather than the “official” one because like too many music videos today, the director opted to turn it into a miniature film – and the song is completely drown out by sound affects. 😐

Fun Facts via Wikipedia:

  • “Blinding Lights” was released in November 2019 as the first single off The Weeknd’s 4th studio album, After Hours which didn’t release until just 9 days ago on March 20th, 2020.
  • The song peaked at #1 in 18 different countries, including the UK – making it The Weeknd’s first #1 hit in the UK.
  • The lyrics supposedly reference The Weeknd’s on/off relationship with Supermodel, Bella Hadid, sister of Gigi Hadid, the Supermodel who’s been in an on/off relationship with UK singer, Zayn Malik since 2015 – apparently the Hadid sisters like rocky relationships with famous singers(?) – not judging, just an observation.

I been tryna call
I been on my own for long enough
Maybe you can show me how to love, maybe
I’m going through withdrawals
You don’t even have to do too much
You can turn me on with just a touch, baby

I look around and Sin City’s cold and empty (oh)
No one’s around to judge me (oh)
I can’t see clearly when you’re gone

I said, ooh, I’m blinded by the lights
No, I can’t sleep until I feel your touch
I said, ooh, I’m drowning in the night
Oh, when I’m like this, you’re the one I trust
Hey, hey, hey

I’m running out of time
‘Cause I can see the sun light up the sky
So I hit the road in overdrive, baby

Oh, the city’s cold and empty (oh)
No one’s around to judge me (oh)
I can’t see clearly when you’re gone

I said, ooh, I’m blinded by the lights
No, I can’t sleep until I feel your touch
I said, ooh, I’m drowning in the night
Oh, when I’m like this, you’re the one I trust

I’m just walking by to let you know (by to let you know)
I can never say it on the phone (say it on the phone)
Will never let you go this time (ooh)

I said, ooh, I’m blinded by the lights
No, I can’t sleep until I feel your touch
Hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey

I said, ooh, I’m blinded by the lights
No, I can’t sleep until I feel your touch

#SongLyricSunday | I Get It – Chevelle

Chevelle performing at the White River Amphitheater 9/22/19

A couple weeks ago I shared pictures from Breaking Benjamin, but they weren’t the only band we got to see that night. They were actually the headliner of a 5 band concert that also included Threes Days Grace, Dorothy, Diamente, and Chevelle! πŸ˜€ #SLS is hosted by Jim over at A Unique Title For Me. Make sure to click on the theme link below to check out all of the other song choices for today!

This week’s theme is: Give|Get|Take|Receive|Send

My song covers the Get prompt, and is conveniently part of the title. This is an older song by Chevelle, but one of my favorites and I was happy for the chance to hear it live in concert, among all the others. Like a lot of their songs, “I Get It” is highly relatable. I think everyone’s had one of these jerks in their lives before, male or female – and some us, more than one! If you’re dealing with someone like this right now, hopefully this makes you feel a little better, or maybe gives you some ideas. 😈

Lead vocalist, Pete Loeffler

So you say you’re ignored
As it is
Well, give us your sad, sad trip

You’re right, I get it
It all makes sense, you’re the perfect person
So right, so wrong
Let’s all live in your imaginary life

Assumed it’s whether
We’re right, I’m wrong
We’re doomed, and there’s plenty for all

How dare you catch me counting
How dare you call at all
How dare you call it suffering
How dare you call at all

You’re right, I get it
It all makes sense, you’re the perfect person
So right, so wrong
Let’s all live in your imaginary life

Press on these tannins
They’re doubled in time
The touch of life, once failed to mention so far

Of course the la is fountains
Of face to face remorse
A fast and restless blackmail
Like pent-up fetish force

You’re right, I get it
It all makes sense, you’re the perfect person
So right, so wrong
Let’s all live in your imaginary life

Do you want enough?
Do you want it all?
Should you need it at all?
Takes a minute to see
Do you want enough?
Do you want it all?
Should you need it at all?
Do you want it or not?

You’re right, I get it
It all makes sense, you’re the perfect person
So right, so wrong
Let’s all live in your imaginary life

Life, life, life

#SongLyricSunday | Girls Like – Tinie Tempah ft. Zara Larsson

I’m totally switching it up this week to keep everyone on their toes. πŸ˜€ #SLS is a weekly music challenge hosted by Jim at A Unique Title For Me. Make sure to click on the theme link below to check out all of the songs for today!

This week’s theme is: North|South|East|West

My song choice is for South and West, bringing you yet another catchy hit from my favorite British rapper, Tinie Tempah that features new-to-me Swedish singer, Zara Larsson. The video for this song just gets me, lol. I don’t know which part I love the most, the girl using the toilet or the dude with a burlap bag over his head, but it’s definitely random enough to make up for the booty dancing (I might be a little jealous of that skill) lol. I’ve included both the official video and because I was curious what Zara Larsson looked like, a live performance video, which is just as good! I’m going to have to check out more of her songs.

Fun Facts via Wikipedia:

  • “Girls Like” was released in 2016 as the second single off of Tinie Tempah‘s album, Youth, and peaked at #5 on the UK Singles Chart.
  • Zara Larsson doesn’t appear in the video, but she has performed the song live with T.T. on several occasions, including at the 2016 Summertime Ball in London (Video below).
  • Despite never reaching #1 on any charts, “Girls Like” is certified 3x Platinum in Sweden, 2x Platinum in the UK, Platinum in Norway, Denmark, & Australia, and Gold in Italy, New Zealand, Germany & Belgium.
  • The video was filmed in a suburb of Cape Town, South Africa named Woodstock.

All the girls like
Said I was the man
All I ever needed was a plan
Tell J.K that we still rolling
Yeah, tell Russell I’m a brand
Yeah, bust that skank
Ain’t nobody messing with the gang
Might take a fly out for the weekend
And go can cause I can
Go low, go low, everybody get low
Had a couple hits and a couple solos
Now I got a couple rents and a couple more boats
Jump parkside, everybody loco
I was jumping off the mandem with a polo
Now I’m with a mandem at the polo
I could make a honey give away her last rolo
Then I say sure, yo, you know how it goes
All the girls like

I know what boys like
I know what they want
They want that good thing
They wanna get some
(All the girls like)
I know what boys like
I know what they want
So go ahead and prove me right
That’s what girls like

Yeah, rollie on the wrist, that’s me, me
Man of the year I’m fleek
Had a couple man wanna be me
Them man can’t be T.T
Tell ’em only winners are allowed
No diggiy-dee, no diggiy-doubt
I was getting blowed but few girls were putting out
Told them I was gonna blow back when I was in the south
Go low, go low, everybody go low
Since she want me she don’t want the coco
So I made her send it back less she want my loco
And I got American, got a Volvo
Used to have a black my piece of Roco
Now everyone I go people want a photo
I could make a honey give away her last rolo
Then I say sure, yo, you know how I roll
All the girls like

I know what boys like
I know what they want
They want that good thing
They wanna get some
(All the girls like)
I know what boys like
I know what they want
So go ahead and prove me right
That’s what girls like

Don’t need me a guy who’s a friend
Better pick me up in a Benz
I like cruising around the West End
No Netflix and chill that’s dead
(All the girls like)
Every day you ride your friends
(All the girls like)
I don’t need your money for my rent
(All the girls like)
I’m not an eight or a nine I’m a ten
(All the girls like)
What’s the code to your wi-fi again?

I know what boys like
I know what they want
They want that good thing
They wanna get some
(All the girls like)
I know what boys like
I know what they want
(All the girls like)
So go ahead and prove me right
That’s what girls like

#SongLyricSunday | Away – Breaking Benjamin

Breaking Benjamin performing at the White River Amphitheater 9/22/19.

I mean…you knew this was coming, right? I can’t mention Breaking Benjamin in a post and then NOT pick one of their songs the following week. πŸ˜€ Gaw, I’m still gushing and just look at that full sleeve tattoo! *melts into chair* And for how close he looks here, it was even closer in real life. I could have just squeezed between 2 people and touched him, but, you know…security. 😐

#SLS is hosted by Jim over at A Unique Title For Me. Click on the theme link below to join along, or to hear all of the other song choices for today!

This week’s theme is: Listen|Hear|Talk|Speak

My song pick is for Hear. Another classic BB song from the original band, released in 2004 on their album, We Are Not Alone. I have a sad confession: I spent many years believing he was saying “I’m coming to take you away” NOT “They’re coming to take you away,” which for a super Ben Burnley fan like me was soooooooo much hotter and fantasy-inducing. But, this is still a sexy-ass song and of course, packed with powerful, passionate vocals, and screamy grrr…’cause, duh.

Benjamin “Ben” Burnley

Fun Facts From Their Concert Witnessed By Me – no Wikipedia needed:

  • Between sets, Ben noticed some kids in the audience and jumped off stage – you should’ve seen his security scramble to go after him, LOL! Ben escorted the kids and their parent(s) up on stage to join his VIP groups already there. One little girl was holding a sign and he led her up to the very front of the stage and asked her name, then asked if it was her birthday, to which she said “Yes” and he asked, “How old are you?” and she said “Eight.” And then, he preceded to have all of us in the audience sing “Happy Birthday” to her. I’ve never seen a kid smile so big – it was awesome, and will undoubtedly be a lifelong memory for that little girl! πŸ˜€
  • At one point Ben started talking about embracing your geek side, as stagehands rolled some weird looking thing out on stage in the dark area where we couldn’t see (and I was only about 2 rows back from the stage). After going on about our inner-geeks, Ben ended his speech with: “Because, you know I’ve already embraced my DARKSIDE!” (Yeah, he growled it just like you imagined) – at which time a handful of red Lightsabers lit up (exactly like they sound in the movies) attached to a drum set, that he then started drumming away on and it was the most geektastic, rockgasmic thing I’ve ever seen or experienced in my entire life. Then, he gave the Lightsabers to his VIP kids, as you can see below in a really blurry pic. LOL
  • Not a Fun Fact: I caught 95% of the concert on video, including the Lightsaber experience, but have yet to find a way to upload any of the videos onto my laptop – nothing I’ve tried so far is working! 😐
L-R: Keith Wallen & Ben Burnley both on guitar with lucky Lightsaber VIP kids in background (Pic is blurry due to red light saturation, sorry).

Cold am I, I’m beside myself
Because there’s no one else
Have I grown so blind?
Only God could save you
If you knew your way to the light
So fly away and leave it behind
Just stay awake
There’s nowhere to hide

I see you
‘Cause you won’t get out of my way
I hear you
‘Cause you won’t quit screaming my name
I feel you
‘Cause you won’t stop touching my skin
I need you
They’re coming to take you away

Frail and dry, I could lose it all
But I cannot recall, it’s all wrong
Don’t cry, clear away this hate
And we could start to make it alright
So fly away and leave it behind
Return someday
With red in your eyes

I see you
‘Cause you won’t get out of my way
I hear you
‘Cause you won’t quit screaming my name
I feel you
‘Cause you won’t stop touching my skin
I need you
They’re coming to take you away

I see you
‘Cause you won’t get out of my way
I hear you
‘Cause you won’t quit screaming my name
I feel you
‘Cause you won’t stop touching my skin
I need you
They’re coming to take you away (away)

#SongLyricSunday | The Collapse – Adelitas Way

Oh look, it’s Sunday again! πŸ˜€ It just sneaks up on me sometimes. #SLS is a music challenge hosted by Jim over at A Unique Title For Me. Make sure to stop by and check out all of the songs for today by clicking the theme link below.

This weeks’s theme is: Ankles|Hands|Feet|Fingers|Toes|Wrists

My pick today is for Hands, and is one of my favorites from Adelitas Way, my second favorite being “Invincible” which WWE fans would recognize. I listen to “The Collapse” the most when I need to get into the right mindset for a badass character who may or may not be a good-guy, though I’ll make you fall in love him, anyway because that’s how we roll here. πŸ˜‰

Fun Wikipedia Facts:

  • Hailing from Las Vegas, Adelitas Way is now an Independent band of the Alternative Rock genre, who’s former guitar player, Keith Wallen, is now with Breaking Benjamin (I’d say awww, but I’m a much bigger fan of BB and just watched Keith perform an amazing partial cover (vocals & all) of Metallica‘s “Enter Sandman” live in concert, sooo… #sorrynotsorry).
  • Adelitas Way has written 3 hit singles that became official theme songs for WWE events: “Invincible” = WWE Superstars; “It’s A New Day” = WWE The Legacy; and “Ready for War (Pray for Peace) = WWE TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs.
  • “The Collapse” is off of the band’s second studio album, Home School Valedictorian, released in 2011. The song reached #2 on the active rock chart.
  • While still an active, touring band, Adelitas Way hasn’t released any new songs or albums since 2018.

Songwriters: Dave Bassett / Trevor Brice Stafford / Rick Anthony Dejesus. Lyrics are in the video, enjoy!

#SongLyricSunday | Call Out My Name – The Weeknd

#SLS is hosted by Jim over at A Unique Title For Me. Make sure to click the theme link below to pop over and check out all of the other song picks for today.

This week’s theme is: Come|Go|Leave|Stay

I don’t know what it is about The Weeknd that I like so much. It’s probably the endless vocal range he has, and the total slight Michael Jackson quality to his voice, or the fact that his music videos are often the perfect mixture of Goth, SciFi, and Twilight Zone (seriously, click here for proof). ❀

Wikipedia Song & Artist Facts:

  • “Call Out My Name” was released in 2018 on The Weeknd’s debut EP, My Dear Melancholy, which hit the market at #1 on the Billboard 200.
  • “Call Out My Name” is unanimously agreed upon by fans as pertaining to The Weeknd’s 10-month relationship with Selena Gomez, during which time, she was very sick with Lupus. The Weeknd won’t confirm that suspicion, but reportedly mentioned in an interview with U Music, that he cancelled shows of a tour to be by Selena’s side.
  • The Weeknd got his start as a YouTube sensation in 2010/2011. His first studio album, Kiss Land, released in 2013 – but it was his 2015 release of Beauty Behind the Madness that earned him his first #1 hit singles – 3 of which held #1 spots simultaneously across Billboards.
  • The Weeknd’s many accolades include 3 Grammy’s, 2 AMA’s, 9 Billboard Music Awards, 9 Juno’s, The Allan Slaight Award from Canada’s Walk of Fame, an Academy Award nomination, and his song “The Hills” from Beauty Behind the Madness was certified Diamond by the RIAA. (I mean, it is a really good song)

That’s some pretty impressive stuff, but all I really know is that I always turn this song up, and belt it out in my car with the windows closed where no one can hear me. πŸ˜€ Gotta love those kind of songs. Enjoy!

We found each other
I helped you out of a broken place
You gave me comfort
But falling for you was my mistake

I put you on top, I put you on top
I claimed you so proud and openly
And when times were rough, when times were rough
I made sure I held you close to me

So call out my name (call out my name)
Call out my name when I kiss you so gently
I want you to stay (I want you to stay)
I want you to stay, even though you don’t want me
Girl, why can’t you wait? (Why can’t you wait, baby?)
Girl, why can’t you wait ’til I fall out of love?
Won’t you call out my name? (Call out my name)
Girl, call out my name, and I’ll be on my way and
I’ll be on my

I said I didn’t feel nothing baby, but I lied
I almost cut a piece of myself for your life
Guess I was just another pit stop
‘Til you made up your mind
You just wasted my time

You’re on top, I put you on top
I claimed you so proud and openly, babe
And when times were rough, when times were rough
I made sure I held you close to me

So call out my name (call out my name, baby)
So call out my name when I kiss you
So gently, I want you to stay (I want you to stay)
I want you to stay even though you don’t want me
Girl, why can’t you wait? (Girl, why can’t you wait ’til I-)
Girl, why can’t you wait ’til I fall out of loving?
Babe, call out my name (say call out my name, baby)
Girl, call out my name, and I’ll be on my way, girl
I’ll be on my

On my way, all the way
On my way, all the way, ooh
On my way, on my way, on my way
On my way, on my way, on my way
(On my)

#SongLyricSunday | Help, I’m Alive – Metric

I might have to start a second blog if I keep this up, there are just too many good words to choose from that it’s hard to decide. This is my second post for today’s theme, which is:

Bounty | Dessert | Eat | Feast | Food | Hungry | Turkey

If you missed my first post, you can find it here: Written In The Stars – Tinie Tempah

For this second post, I’ve chosen the first song I ever heard by the Canadian rock band, Metric called “Help, I’m alive.” There aren’t many lyrics to the song, just the same handful on repeat, yet it’s still catchy and even though I don’t listen to it often, when it does come on, I’m like “Oh, I love this song!”

Fun Facts via Wikipedia:

  • Despite being the lead single off of their 4th studio album, “Help, I’m Alive” was Metric’s first song to ever chart in the US, hitting #17 on the Billboard Alternative Songs.
  • The song was written by lead singer, Emily Haines while soul searching in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
  • The song reached an even larger audience by being played on multiple hit TV shows like One Tree Hill, Beverly Hills 90210, Grey’s Anatomy, and The Vampire Diaries. It was also featured on the popular video game NBA 2K10.
  • Even though it was released in 2008/2009, it was used by the BBC for the 2nd season trailer of “Line of Duty” in 2014, and the acoustic version was used in 2016 in a video for the United Network for Organ Sharing.

Enjoy!

I tremble

They’re gonna eat me alive

If I stumble

They’re gonna eat me alive

Can you hear my heart beating like a hammer?
Beating like a hammer

Help I’m alive, my heart keeps beating like a hammer
Hard to be soft
Tough to be tender
Come take my pulse, the pace is on a runaway train
Help I’m alive my heart keeps beating like a hammer
Beating like a hammer
Beating like a hammer
Beating like a hammer

If you’re still alive
My regrets are few
If my life is mine
What shouldn’t I do?
I get wherever I’m going
I get whatever I need
While my blood’s still flowing
And my heart’s still beating like a hammer
Beating like a hammer

Help I’m alive, my heart keeps beating like a hammer
Hard to be soft
Tough to be tender
Come take my pulse, the pace is on a runaway train
Help I’m alive, my heart keeps beating like a hammer
Beating like a hammer
Beating like a hammer
Beating like a hammer

If you’re still alive
My regrets are few
If my life is mine
What shouldn’t I do?
I get wherever I’m going
I get whatever I need
While my blood’s still flowing
And my heart’s still
Beating like a hammer
Beating like a hammer
Beating like a hammer
Beating like a hammer

I tremble

They’re gonna eat me alive

If I stumble

They’re gonna eat me alive

Can you hear my heart beating like a hammer?
Beating like a hammer
Beating like a hammer

#SongLyricSunday | Written In The Stars – Tinie Tempah ft. Eric Turner

Happy Thanksgiving to all who will be digging into their feasts this coming Thursday! I’m personally not a big fan of turkey, but I love everything else that comes with the holiday. Deviled eggs and stuffing, mashed taters, gravy, biscuits, apple cider and pie…all that pie! LOL I know most families have their own traditional dishes, so I hope you all get some of your favorites!

Of course, our host Jim has given us a list of words to choose from this week in honor of the holiday – none of which has anything to do with football, though I totally could’ve worked with that. πŸ˜€ There are so many words, that I couldn’t decided so will be publishing 2 separate #SLS posts. Make sure to stop by Jim’s blog, A Unique Title For Me, by clicking on the theme link below to listen to all of the other songs picked for today!

This week’s theme is: Bounty | Dessert | Eat | Feast | Food | Hungry | Turkey

I’ve mentioned before that “Written In The Stars” was the first song I ever heard by English rapper, Tinie Tempah and it’s still one of my favorites of his to this day. I also think it’s quite fitting for the upcoming holiday, where we’re supposed to reflect on the things we’re thankful for. The song is an inspirational tale about coming up from nothing and working hard to make your dreams come true, and most importantly never giving up on them. It features American singer, Eric Turner for the chorus and piano.

Time for the Wikipedia facts:

  • “Written In The Stars” was released in 2010 as the third single off Tinie Tempah’s debut album, Disc-Overy.
  • It was his second #1 hit in the UK after “Pass Out,” debuting at #1 on the UK Singles Chart.
  • It was his first single to play in the US, reaching #12 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was in the top 10 on Billboard Mainstream Top 40.
  • “Written In The Stars” is certified Platinum in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, and Sweden. It’s 10x Platinum in Norway, and Gold in New Zealand.
  • In 2012, the song played during the London Olympic Games closing ceremony, and Tempah performed it live at Wembley Stadium for the FA Cup Final in 2016.

In an Interview with Tinie Tempah by the BBC, he explained his reference to Malorie Blackman:

  • When Tinie Tempah discovered that British Author, Malorie Blackman, also hailed from Peckham where he’d been born (though he grew up in Plumstead), he knew he had to include a reference to her in his song because his sister loved her book Noughts and Crosses. I don’t know if it’s considered ironic, but Blackman also penned a book titled Chasing the Stars. Her response to the song on Twitter was very positive and supportive, and she even thanked Tinie for giving her a “name check.”

My second pick for today is: “Help, I’m Alive” by Metric. Enjoy!

Oh written in the stars
A million miles away
A message to the mane
Oh
Seasons come and go
But I will never change
And I’m on my way

Let’s go
Yeah
You’re listening now
They say they ain’t heard nothing like this in a while
That’s why they play my song on so many different dials
‘Cause I got more fuckin’ hits than a disciplined child
When they see me everybody brrap’s, brraps
Man I’m like a young gun fully black Barrack
I cried tear drops over the massive attack
I only make hits like I work with a racket and bat
Look at my jacket and hat
So damn berserk
So down to earth
I’m bringing gravity back
Adopted by the major I want my family back
People work hard just to get all their salary taxed
Look I’m just a writer from the ghetto like Malory Blackman
Where the hells all the sanity at, damn
I used to be the kid that no one cared about
That’s why you have to keep screaming ’til they hear you out

Oh written in the stars
A million miles away
A message to the mane
Oh
Seasons come and go
But I will never change
And I’m on my way

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!

Yeah, I needed a change
When we ate we never took because we needed a change
I needed a break
For a sec’ I even gave up believing and praying
I even done illegal stuff and was leaded astray
They say the money is the root to the evilest ways
But have you ever been so hungry that it keeps you awake?
Mate, now my hunger would leave them amazed
Great, it feels like a long time coming, fam’
Since the day I thought of that cunning plan
One day I had a dream I tried to chase it
But I wasn’t going nowhere, running man!
I knew that maybe someday I would understand
Trying to turn a tenner to a hundred grand
Everyone’s a kid that no-one cares about
You just have to keep screaming ’til they hear you out

Oh written in the stars
A million miles away
A message to the mane
Oh
Seasons come and go
But I will never change
And I’m on my way

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!Oh seasons come and go
But I will never change
And I’m on my way

#SongLyricSunday | It Ends Tonight – All American Rejects

Make sure to stop by Jim’s blog, A Unique Title For Me, to check out all of the song choices for today!

This week’s theme is: Did | Didn’t | Do | Don’t | Does | Doesn’t

I’m picking an old hit from the All American Rejects today that still pops up in my library every now and again. I love the piano intro and never get tired of that part. Now for the fun Wikipedia facts:

“It Ends Tonight” was released in 2006 and was the last single off AAR’s second studio album, Move Along. It hit #8 on the Billboard Hot 100, giving the band their first top ten hit in the U.S. and Australia until they released “Gives You Hell” two years later.

The video was filmed in Nevada on the Moapa Indian Reservation. Despite being a pop ballad, it’s rather celebratory in nature, using an impromptu fireworks show and concert in the desert to emphasize the freedom and lightness brought to the narrator by ending a bad relationship.

It’s just one of those songs that I can listen to every once in awhile over the years and still like it the same as I did when it first came out. Enjoy!

Your subtleties
They strangle me
I can’t explain myself at all
And all the wants
And all the needs
All I don’t want to need at all

The walls start breathing
My mind’s un-weaving
Maybe it’s best you leave me alone
A weight is lifted
On this evening
I give the final blow

When darkness turns to light
It ends tonight
It ends tonight

A falling star
Least I fall alone
I can’t explain what you can’t explain
Your finding things that you didn’t know
I look at you with such disdain

The walls start breathing
My mind’s un-weaving
Maybe it’s best you leave me alone
A weight is lifted
On this evening
I give the final blow

When darkness turns to light
It ends tonight
It ends tonight
Just a little insight won’t make this right
It’s too late to fight
It ends tonight
It ends tonight

Now I’m on my own side
It’s better than being on your side
It’s my fault when you’re blind
It’s better that I see it through your eyes

All these thoughts locked inside
Now you’re the first to know

When darkness turns to light
It ends tonight
It ends tonight
Just a little insight won’t make this right
It’s too late to fight
It ends tonight
It ends

When darkness turns to light
It ends tonight
It ends tonight
Just a little insight won’t make this right
It’s too late to fight
It ends tonight

It ends tonight, tonight, insight

When darkness turns to light
It ends tonight

#SongLyricSunday | Try Again – Aaliyah

A big Thank You to our host, Jim over at A Unique Title For Me for another week of musical themes to challenge ourselves with. I was actually surprised I thought of a song right off the bat, since there are so many frequently used words to choose from. Make sure you click on the theme link below to check out all of the other song picks for today!

This week’s theme is: Could | Might | Should | Would

I went with Aaliyah’s “Try Again” from the Romeo Must Die soundtrack. This was one of the best movies when it came out, but then, I’m a fan of Jet Li, Aaliyah, and William Shakespeare so I’m biased. The movie was reportedly a ‘loose’ adaptation of Romeo & Juliet (I’d say extremely loose). Though it’s not my all-time favorite Aaliyah or Jet Li movie, if you’ve never seen it, I highly recommend it and have included the movie trailer at the end of this post.

Last October (2018) I did a post for #Rocktoberfest that went into more detail about the late and highly talented Aaliyah with an “Aaliyah Remembered video” that you can check out here. For those of you who didn’t know of her, she was yet another star still on the rise when she died in a tragic plane crash in 2001- just one year after the release of this song and following the filming of her second movie and blockbuster hit: The Queen of The Damned. I still remember watching the “Breaking News” broadcast and just feeling completely shocked. She was too young and so talented both in her acting and her singing career.

“Try Again” was the lead single from the Romeo Must Die movie soundtrack. It reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 & Hot 100 Airplay, #3 on the Mainstream Top 40, and was at #12 for the Year-End chart for 2000. The video features Timbaland, Aaliyah, and Jet Li. According to Wikipedia, the mirrored hall in the video was inspired by Bruce Lee’s Enter The Dragon. The video won the MTV Music Award for “Best Video From A Film” and “Best Female Video.” It was choreographed by Fatima Robinson, who has choreographed videos for Michael Jackson, Meghan Trainor, Mary J. Blige, The Black Eyed Peas, and more.

The section where Jet helps Aaliyah run on the wall was a reenactment of a scene from the movie and I just love the candidness they captured in the video of Jet laughing and them playing around with the move like a dance. Enjoy!

It’s been a long time (long time), we shouldn’t of left you (left you),
Without a dope beat to step to (step to, step to, step to, step to).
It’s been a long time (long time), we shouldn’t of left you (left you),
Without a dope beat to step to (step to, step to, step to, step to).

What would you do, to get to me?
What would you say, to have your way?
Would you give it up or try again?
If I hesitate to let you in?
Now would you be yourself, or play a role?
Tell all the boys, or keep it low?
If I say no, would you turn away,
Or play me off or would you stay?
Oh

If at first you don’t succeed (first you don’t succeed),
Dust yourself off, and try again
You can dust it off and try again, try again
Cause if at first you don’t succeed (first you don’t succeed),
Dust yourself off, and try again
You can dust it off and try again, dust yourself off and try again, try again

I’m into you, you into me? But I can’t let it go, so easily.
Not ’till I see, where this could be, could be eternally, or just week.
You know our chemistry, it’s off the chain.
It’s perfect now, but will it change?
This ain’t a yes, this ain’t a no.
Just do your thang, and we’ll see how it goes.
Ooooh

If at first you don’t succeed (first you don’t succeed),
Dust yourself off, and try again
You can dust it off and try again, try again
Cause if at first you don’t succeed (first you don’t succeed),
Dust yourself off, and try again
You can dust it off and try again, dust yourself off and try again, try again

See you don’t wanna throw it all away.
I might be shy on the first day,
But what about the next day? (huh, huh, huh, huh)
See you don’t wanna throw it all away.
I might be buggin’ on the first day,
But what about the next day? (huh, huh, huh, huh)

It’s been a long time (long time), we shouldn’t of left you (left you),
Without a dope beat to step to (step to, step to, step to, step to)
