#SongLyricSunday | Written In The Stars – Tinie Tempah ft. Eric Turner

Happy Thanksgiving to all who will be digging into their feasts this coming Thursday! I’m personally not a big fan of turkey, but I love everything else that comes with the holiday. Deviled eggs and stuffing, mashed taters, gravy, biscuits, apple cider and pie…all that pie! LOL I know most families have their own traditional dishes, so I hope you all get some of your favorites!

Of course, our host Jim has given us a list of words to choose from this week in honor of the holiday – none of which has anything to do with football, though I totally could’ve worked with that. 😀 There are so many words, that I couldn’t decided so will be publishing 2 separate #SLS posts. Make sure to stop by Jim’s blog, A Unique Title For Me, by clicking on the theme link below to listen to all of the other songs picked for today!

This week’s theme is: Bounty | Dessert | Eat | Feast | Food | Hungry | Turkey

I’ve mentioned before that “Written In The Stars” was the first song I ever heard by English rapper, Tinie Tempah and it’s still one of my favorites of his to this day. I also think it’s quite fitting for the upcoming holiday, where we’re supposed to reflect on the things we’re thankful for. The song is an inspirational tale about coming up from nothing and working hard to make your dreams come true, and most importantly never giving up on them. It features American singer, Eric Turner for the chorus and piano.

Time for the Wikipedia facts:

  • “Written In The Stars” was released in 2010 as the third single off Tinie Tempah’s debut album, Disc-Overy.
  • It was his second #1 hit in the UK after “Pass Out,” debuting at #1 on the UK Singles Chart.
  • It was his first single to play in the US, reaching #12 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was in the top 10 on Billboard Mainstream Top 40.
  • “Written In The Stars” is certified Platinum in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, and Sweden. It’s 10x Platinum in Norway, and Gold in New Zealand.
  • In 2012, the song played during the London Olympic Games closing ceremony, and Tempah performed it live at Wembley Stadium for the FA Cup Final in 2016.

In an Interview with Tinie Tempah by the BBC, he explained his reference to Malorie Blackman:

  • When Tinie Tempah discovered that British Author, Malorie Blackman, also hailed from Peckham where he’d been born (though he grew up in Plumstead), he knew he had to include a reference to her in his song because his sister loved her book Noughts and Crosses. I don’t know if it’s considered ironic, but Blackman also penned a book titled Chasing the Stars. Her response to the song on Twitter was very positive and supportive, and she even thanked Tinie for giving her a “name check.”

My second pick for today is: “Help, I’m Alive” by Metric. Enjoy!

Oh written in the stars
A million miles away
A message to the mane
Oh
Seasons come and go
But I will never change
And I’m on my way

Let’s go
Yeah
You’re listening now
They say they ain’t heard nothing like this in a while
That’s why they play my song on so many different dials
‘Cause I got more fuckin’ hits than a disciplined child
When they see me everybody brrap’s, brraps
Man I’m like a young gun fully black Barrack
I cried tear drops over the massive attack
I only make hits like I work with a racket and bat
Look at my jacket and hat
So damn berserk
So down to earth
I’m bringing gravity back
Adopted by the major I want my family back
People work hard just to get all their salary taxed
Look I’m just a writer from the ghetto like Malory Blackman
Where the hells all the sanity at, damn
I used to be the kid that no one cared about
That’s why you have to keep screaming ’til they hear you out

Oh written in the stars
A million miles away
A message to the mane
Oh
Seasons come and go
But I will never change
And I’m on my way

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!

Yeah, I needed a change
When we ate we never took because we needed a change
I needed a break
For a sec’ I even gave up believing and praying
I even done illegal stuff and was leaded astray
They say the money is the root to the evilest ways
But have you ever been so hungry that it keeps you awake?
Mate, now my hunger would leave them amazed
Great, it feels like a long time coming, fam’
Since the day I thought of that cunning plan
One day I had a dream I tried to chase it
But I wasn’t going nowhere, running man!
I knew that maybe someday I would understand
Trying to turn a tenner to a hundred grand
Everyone’s a kid that no-one cares about
You just have to keep screaming ’til they hear you out

Oh written in the stars
A million miles away
A message to the mane
Oh
Seasons come and go
But I will never change
And I’m on my way

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!Oh seasons come and go
But I will never change
And I’m on my way

#RocktoberMusicFest ♪ “Again” – Flyleaf

“All Around Me” was the first song from Flyleaf I heard on the radio that captured my attention and led me to becoming a huge fan of this band. “Sorrow” will always be my favorite song of theirs forever. It’s one that I can listen to and never get tired of hearing, because the lyrics are so poetically captivating.

Sometimes life seems to quiet, into paralyzing silence
Like the moonless dark, meant to make me strong
Familiar breaths of my old lives
Change the color in my eyes
Soon he will perforate the fabric of the peaceful by and by…

Ahhh…have you ever seen more beautifully constructed lyrics? Unfortunately, I’ve already posted that song and “New Horizons” in previous posts.

“Fully Alive” and “Red Sam” are good recommendations for new listeners, and if you’re human, “Supernatural” will bring you tears. Flyleaf has released many albums since their debut, but I couldn’t tell you anything about their newer music, because I stopped listening to them when their lead singer, Lacey Sturm, left the band. Their new lead singer might be awesome, I don’t know and I don’t care, I love Lacey. #SorryNotSorry. She’s like the size of a Polly Pocket, yet can belt out a voice that would knock The Rock on his ass – which you’ll hear later this month during my Halloween Playlist. For now, I present “Again”, a song that still displays some of Lacey’s vocal range, only without reaching her impressive screamo skills. Enjoy!

#RocktoberMusicFest ♪ “Adrenalize” – In This Moment

Remember, I promised that if you stuck around I would show you some real girly metal? Okay, then you can’t say I didn’t warn you LOL 😉

This was the first song I ever heard by In This Moment, and I was hooked! I immediately hit YouTube in search of anything and everything by them. I’ve already shared their song “Blood” in a previous post about songs that inspire aspects of my characters. I suppose this one would suit the same character just as well, and for those who’ve read my Avarice series, you know exactly who I’m talking about.

Though most of their songs are a mixture of heavy-metal with a touch of screamo, ITM does have at least one full screamo track that I’m aware of, called “The Gun Show”. The craziest thing about lead singer, Maria Brink, aside from her stellar talent, is how calm and soft-spoken she is off stage. There are a few interviews and live performances by her on YouTube that show her mellower side and that her beautiful voice has a lot of range. Now, I wouldn’t normally give warnings when it comes to music, but with this being a blog hop, I just feel I should. I’ve gotten to know some of my fellow participants and we don’t all have the same taste in music, so to be courteous…

Warning: In This Moment is a Screamo/Heavy Metal band that uses blunt, illicit lyrics and footage. This video and song may be offensive to non-ITM fans; watch/listen at your own risk. Okay, Enjoy!

#RocktoberMusicfest ♫ “Comfortable Liar” & “Brainiac” – Chevelle

“The Red” was the hit single that turned me onto Chevelle back in my early-to-mid 20’s and I still love them. I had a hard time choosing which of their songs I wanted to highlight, because like most bands who’ve been around for awhile, their sound has gone through some changes. Luckily, Chevelle‘s one of those bands who can manage a range of sounds and still rock the eff out of it. Pete Loeffler just has one of those voices that can span the spectrum from super smooth to screamo.  So, today I’m offering two choices:

“Comfortable Liar” is from the same album as “The Red” and another one of those songs that grabbed me due to the guitar. Chevelle never ‘over stimulates’ their fans with their talents on the guitar, but sneaks extra little things into certain songs, kind of like getting a present “just because”. This is definitely one those songs.

“Brainiac” is one of the songs that I love listening to when I’m driving, but is also the most dangerous for me to listen to while I’m steering a motorized weapon down the street – because, I’m already a little impatient as a driver. The super fast pace of this track will get you moving, for sure, but then when you start actually hearing the lyrics, you’ll like it even more. Or maybe that’s just me and my twisted sense of humor. 😀 Enjoy!

#RocktoberMusicFest ♫ “Going Under” – Evanescence

Although the band debuted in 1995, Evanescence’s debut studio album “Fallen” was the BEST thing to happen to the music scene in the early 2000’s. It was time for a change on the airwaves; Amy Lee and her band knew exactly how to bring it. Of course, it was the blockbuster movie “Daredevil” that really catapulted Evanescence’s exposure to a mass audience all at once with their most popular track “Bring Me To Life”, but there isn’t a single bad song on the entire album, nor for many of their albums after.

“Lithium” is one of my favorites that was released in later years, and who doesn’t like “Broken”, Amy’s duet with Seether? I wanted to go back to their earlier releases for my post though, because this song just happened to come out around the same time I was making the choice to “save myself” from some pretty bad choices, and remains one of my go-to songs when I’m feeling the need for some girl-powered rock. Enjoy!

#RocktoberMusicfest ♪ “The Kill” – Thirty Seconds To Mars

Joker

Jared Leto as The Joker in “Suicide Squad”

Look, it’s Mr. J playing Mr. J!

Hehe, I couldn’t help myself. But loooooooooong before Jared Leto was winning Oscars for blockbuster hits like The Dallas Buyers Club or taking on the role of the greatest super-villain ever created, he was making music with his band, Thirty Seconds to Mars. “The Kill” was the first song I ever heard by them, but 30STM’s sound evolved over the years with quite a lot of success. I like tracks from a variety of their albums, as my bloggers know, because this isn’t the first time I’ve featured them. 🙂

Plus, as we creep closer to Halloween, this video is a great start to put you in the mood for haunting horrors; it’s kind of like The Shining meets Ghost Ship with a 30STM twist.

Enjoy!

#RocktoberMusicFest ♫ “Giving In” – Adema

You know, until now I’ve never tried to pinpoint what it is about this song that I like so much. You only need to skim the surface of the lyrics, to know that the song is about giving into an addiction, which isn’t something I can immediately relate to. Yet, if you dive into the deeper emotions below the lyrics, I have definitely felt this way before. Because it’s not altogether an addiction, so much as giving into something–anything–that leaves you feeling a little dead inside the next day. That’s how I interpret the “dying tonight” verse, it’s not a physical death…it’s the tiny deaths of the person you used to be, or the person you want to be; and that covers a wide range of bad decisions. I think that’s why this song is so relatable to a variety of people and situations.

I’ve had this on my immediate playlist since it first hit the airwaves in 2001. It’s just everything dark, uncomfortable, enraged, self-deprecating and when you’re in that mood, it’s the one that usually does the trick. Plus, it’s a fantastic outlet for when I’m working with characters who have this kind of energy and I need to either tap into it or release it.

This is the only song I know by Adema off the top of my head. I bought the CD when it came out, because there was no such thing as “streaming” back then, but I can’t recall any of the other songs from the album. I couldn’t find a lyrics video that sounded good, so this is the official one. I recommend hitting play and then not watching the video while listening – you’ll hear so much more without the visual distraction. Enjoy!

#RocktoberMusicFest ♪ “Warm Machine” – Bush

I was in my early teens when Grunge took over the music industry. Local bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam (yeah, they’re from my neck of the woods) lit up the airwaves and inspired countless bands to follow. Even so, the genre of grunge just didn’t have the power to suck me in to the point of spending all my allowance on flannels the way it did for everyone else. Then, there was Bush. When Gavin Rossdale started filling my eardrums with his sexy, gritty voice, teaching me how to breathe properly, only to take my breath away with every other song, I declared him my future ex-husband. Of course, he’s still my first future ex-husband of choice, but more have been added to the list, so I’m over it…a little. Maybe.

Anyway, I know I’ve already used this song in a previous post for a different music event, but hopefully it’s been long enough that no one quite remembers. And I love SOOOOOOOOOOO many different Bush songs, I should be able to pick one I’ve never posted about before. Honestly, I think I have Gavin Rossdale songs most people have never even heard of, so why do I keep choosing this song over every other track in my extensive collection???

That damn guitar. It just gets me every freaking time…

#RocktoberMusicFest ♪ “Rooster” – Alice In Chains

Somewhere along the evolution of my musical life, when I was supposed to be moving away from my parents’ influence and discovering my own bands, songs and tastes, my mom pulled a 180, embraced her inner rocker and introduced ME to Alice In Chains in the early 90’s; not the the other way around. It was awesome! “Man in the Box” was her favorite and that’s still a popular hit, but when “Rooster” was released, it immediately became my #1 pick.

“Rooster” was written by Alice In Chain‘s guitarist, Jerry Cantrell, about his dad in the Vietnam War and the kind of emotional and mental state it left him in after. In interviews, Jerry reveals that “Rooster” had been his dad’s family-given nickname. The song was not only a huge commercial success for the band, it more importantly helped mend Jerry and his dad’s estranged relationship. The official music video has an interview with his dad in the beginning. I couldn’t stomach the graphic footage for the rest of the video, as my dad is also a Vietnam Vet, but it’s on YouTube for those who are interested. Enjoy!

#RocktoberMusicFest ♪ “Nothing Else Matters” – Metallica

I usually say I’m the daughter of a musician, because my dad can play different instruments – BUT – first and foremost, I’m the daughter of a guitarist. Acoustic, electric, steel, ukulele, banjo, dad can jam on just about anything with strings.

You have to watch him at family BBQ’s, though. This is where he likes to sneak the banjo out and pick the creepy chords from Deliverance.

“Daaaaaaaaaad…”
“Oh c’mon, it’s funny.”
“You’re scaring the neighbors.”
“I know, that’s why it’s funny.”

Yep, my twisted sense of humor is all natural, folks, what can I say? 😉

And my dad’s one of those musicians who can play by ear, too, the brat. He doesn’t need sheet music like the rest of us. Growing up with the sound of live guitar music definitely influenced my love for the instrument and there are certain songs where the guitar will instantly cut right through the fabric of my reality, put me in a trance and I’m a slave to it for life. It will always have that power over me, even years later.

Metallica is known for their guitar rifts and intros, it’s one of their trademarks, so it’s not easy to pick a song that demonstrates that better than the rest. And I know, I totally picked a “girly” song from the lot, but you just stick around and I’ll show you some real girly metal [insert evil grin here]. This is my Metallica Guitar Song, the one that did me in from the first note. (Fade to Black is a very close second.) Enjoy!
