Blake was right behind her, when Sida shoved off the ground and raced back down the ferny slope toward camp. They could hear Ketha’s voice cutting through the melee, shouting orders in between shots fired. Night abruptly turned into day when the patrol cruiser crested the ridge right behind them, forcing them to hit the ground again. Sida lost her footing in the process and slid downhill on her ass, before tumbling into somersaults. Mid-roll, Blake lifted her from the ground and tossed her further ahead. With a startled, winded grunt, she glanced over her shoulder to see a proton net hit the ground where she’d just been and disperse.

“Thanks.” She managed, when he grabbed her hand and pulled her back into the race beside him. Her head was spinning from the continuous momentum, but her vision was clear as ever. “That’s a Meylosian cruiser!”

“Noticed,” he shouted over the propulsion system and thrusters hitting the jungle with the force of a tropical storm. Leaves and vines thrashed all around them, kicking up tiny whirlwinds of debris. “I thought they were neutral?”

“So did I!” she hollered back, as they dodged another net. They both saw something big and dark race through the underbrush up ahead. “What was that?”

“Not a Meylosian.”

“It looked humanoid,” Sida observed.

“Less science, more running for your life!” Blake shot, tossing her earlier command back in her face.

Two more creatures passed them, running in the opposite direction, surefooted and extraordinarily fast through the jungle. Right toward the cruiser. Their leaping grace could’ve belonged to a gazelle or jungle cat, but they were definitely humanoid.

“DUCK!”

Sida was tackled to the ground, as Blake covered her and another net flew right over their bodies to disperse on a tree.

“Sonofabitch!” she snarled, lunging to her feet as soon as she was able, and forcing her legs to work even faster than before.

Another creature charged out of the trees right before them. That close, there was no mistaking the long poleaxe in its hand; just as black as the rest of it and glinting as menacingly as its red, reflective eyes. The NT appeared male and had to be no less than seven-feet tall, wearing some kind of head-to-toe body armor that looked more like a second skin. At the sight of them, its lips peeled back in a dangerous growl. Sida lifted her rifle, but it merely darted around them like an agile deer. In the next instant, they witnessed all of the NTs use the trees to ricochet jump high into the air and land atop the cruiser in a matter of seconds. Their saber-tipped spears cut right through the hull of the ship like it was made out of paper.

“Sida, run!” Blake yelled in panic, when the cruiser tilted drastically and headed into a nosedive right toward the forest floor. The thickness of the treetops and vines kept it from impacting as explosively as they’d both been fearing, but it still shook the entire planet it seemed. “Don’t stop, I think there’s more!”

Without the one to slow them down, it was only a matter of seconds before Sida finally surged through the last bit of jungle and into their small camp. She nearly collided with another NT and three of her own people trying to run out of the camp–and by the time she realized why, it was too late. A neon blue net was flying right for them and she’d put herself directly in its path. Strong hands shoved her sideways from behind, sending her flying to the ground so hard, she skidded on her stomach. Sucking in a sharp breath, she rolled onto her side and scrambled off the ground to stop what was about to happen, only to watch the net wrap around the entire group all at once–including the one who’d just saved her ass.

“BLAKE!” she screamed in horror to see him and three more of her crew getting hauled away in the net. She ran after them, screaming like it would change anything. “Blake! Johansen! No, no, NO!”

There was a third cruiser that both her team and the NTs were working together on battling, but Sida dodged them, still chasing the one carrying a net full of her people away. Switching her rifle to max reserves, she was racing on pure adrenaline. The multitude of injuries and fiery burn of exertion in her muscles were numbed by it. When she finally had a clear shot, she stopped, aimed and curled her finger over the trigger. The cruiser cleared the ledge, soaring over the valley and putting the captives at immediate risk of death from the fall if she took the shot.

“Dammit, DAMMIT!” she raged.

Sida watched helplessly as her people grew more and more distant through the scope of her rifle, and the guilt that instantly swamped her was intense. One of the NTs leaped right in front of her like a solid wall of black. He growled threateningly, because one of his own was also in the net and he obviously believed she was still planning to take the shot. Sida gave two shits about his reasons. Frustrated, fighting tears and racked with guilt, she growled in outrage right back at him. The alien jerked upright and its animal-like eyes widened as if startled.

“Captain!”

Keeping her weapon aimed at the NT, Sida slowly backed away from it, toward Ketha’s voice.

“Are you hurt?” she asked the Lieutenant.

“My leg,” Ketha admitted, limping to her. “I think I fractured it. Why are the Meylos attacking?”

“I don’t know, but–”

Sida’s words faltered when the NT she’d just had a growling match with started advancing on them and as he did, the black armor that covered him began to disappear. Underneath was a very humanoid male with dark golden skin, slightly pointed ears and long hair of jet black wearing nothing more than a dark, calf-length sarong. The only thing that didn’t change were his eyes, remaining the same orange-red hue that reflected the light like a felines. In that moment, Sida may have believed that Egyptian gods were real, because she was staring right at one.

“Captain.” Another familiar voice called out.

Sida pivoted to see Ensigns Darling and McConnell being led into the area at the spear points of more NTs who were still covered in all black. It had to be some kind of bio-armor encoded in their DNA, a natural defense triggered by a chemical reaction whenever they sensed danger or fear. A sort of retractable exoskeleton possibly made out of a form of keratin. But where did it retract to, their pores? The scientist in her was practically frothing at the mouth.

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a fourth NT stalk around the others and head right for the unarmored one. He asked Goldy a question and the fact that Sida’s translator didn’t kick on, meant it was an alien language Earth hadn’t discovered yet. Goldy answered while gesturing at Sida and Ketha, so the other stepped toward them, his armor also receding to reveal the flesh underneath. Sida wished she could watch the process under a high-powered microscope. Her eyes tried so hard to narrow in on the action, but it was too damn dark. Then she peered into his face and immediately took a step back, lifting her rifle again, because he was more. So much more than the other one.

His features were ten times more delicious, his mouth alone triggered an insane amount of fantasies to race through her mind. Desires she’d never even been aware of, and Sida Marx was not a bashful girl! Without pause, he grabbed the barrel of her rifle and lifted it before she could even hope to get a shot off, holding it upright between them as he towered over her. His eyes drank in every minute detail of her face, as if she were the most fascinating thing he’d ever seen. Then, he reached out and caressed the wild strands of her hair, which had been whipped free of her braid. She’d lost her hat somewhere between dodging nets and NTs, apparently. Even as she jerked her head out of his reach, an enticing musk filled all of Sida’s senses. Her stomach gurgled in hunger and her throat dried from thirst, despite the saliva forming along her tongue with craving.

“De-etto,” he ordered, his voice an aphrodisiac to her ears.

Sida shook her head, not only because she didn’t understand him, but to dislodge the drugging effect he had over her mind.

“De-etto,” he repeated, but this time he touched his fingers to her throat.

Electricity crackled through her, instantly weakening her muscles. Pure, unadulterated lust speared right through her core to flood her thighs. As her entire body heated and grew lax, her brain continued to cloud over, going under a blanket of sensations thicker than the humidity. Her reaction had the NT’s eyes flashing wide and his musk intensified, smothering her. Sida was wrapped up in his strong arm and pulled into his hard body. Need surged through her veins, and she was certain her arousal scented the air, because the NT inhaled deeply as if he could smell it.

Whatever neurons in her brain that were meant to trigger embarrassment, outrage, survival instincts–something–appeared to be malfunctioning, because all she wanted to do was let this alien have his way with her until she forgot her own damn name. But the bastard was doing it on purpose. Using it as a weapon against her. Sida had too much training in psychic and cognitive psychological warfare not to recognize it when it was hitting her full force. Knowing that made it easier for reason to break through the fog and remind her of the very real and frightening situation she was in. Like the fact that part of her crew had just been abducted by Meylosians and the others were either injured or in possible danger from the natives. Sida grabbed onto the insult of his deliberate attack, added it to the frustration, panic and guilt, and prepared to do as much damage as possible.

Fuck diplomacy.

The NT’s eyes swam with the promise of death by pleasure, vowing to give her more than she’d ever dreamed possible and when his gaze dropped to her mouth, she couldn’t escape the full-body shiver. That’s when she swung. He was too humanoid. Too gloriously male and sensually potent. His lush mouth moved closer to hers, their breaths mingling and the sensation went somewhere deeper than it should have. She fought with teeth gritting determination, but her vision still went hazy, even as her knuckles connected with his jaw. The second point of physical contact was like shooting herself with a proton pistol. It fried her brain completely, even while pleasure rippled all the way to her toes.

The Hot Seat 🔥 Autumn Brown

Hot Seat Banner

Welcome to another session of The Hot Seat, where I get to put our favorite Heroes and Heroines in the “hot seat” for a little Q&A! Today, I’m here with Autumn Brown from Didi Oviatt’s new Crime Thriller, Search For Maylee.

Now, normally I like to set the scene for the audience, so they can visualize who I’m interviewing, but Autumn is currently in disguise for a very important sting operation…so, go read the book.

AC: Welcome to The Hot Seat, Autumn, can you tell us a little more about yourself? Where you’re from and how you ended up in Denver in the middle of an undercover operation to take down a sex trafficking ring?

AB: Oh my, A.C. what a story I have for you! My niece Maylee was kidnapped at the age of eighteen three years ago. I finally mustered up the courage to chase after a lead in her case, and I wound up in a mess much bigger than anything I could have ever anticipated.

AC: I know you can’t say much about the investigation, so we’ll venture into some safer questions. What’s your view on relationships?

AB: Well, until now I’ve shunned even the thought of a relationship for nearly twenty years. I lost my husband in an accident shortly after we were married, and have had no desire to replace him. Let’s just say a man I used to loathe entirely proved himself to be more than what I expected.

AC: That sounds interesting, and maybe that your first impression wasn’t so great?

AB: For a man with the sexiest eyes I’ve ever seen, he sure did have a heartless attitude and a sure ego.

AC: Glad to hear his true colors were better than expected. Would you say he’s changed your previous views on relationships, then?

AB: I’d have to say Chance not only changed my views, but he changed nearly every aspect of my life. I’ll never be the same.

AC: Outside of your current situation, would you say you’re a social butterfly, family gal, career-oriented or a little of each?

AB: I’m a family gal through and through. I don’t have much family to claim so the few members I do love, I’ve dedicated myself to one hundred percent. I sold my condo as well nearly all of my belongings and moved halfway across the country to find my missing loved one. I’ll do anything to get her back.

AC: If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

AB: I’m a planner by nature. Recently I’ve found myself in a few situations that there was no time to plan. I’ve had to trust my instincts, be brave, and let my intuition do the talking rather than figuring it out beforehand. If I could change anything about myself, it would be the confidence to throw the planning book out the window and trust in myself to do what needs to be done spur of the moment, without so much grueling fear.

AC: What is your biggest drive or mission in life?

AB: I’ve had to force myself to find the strength to face some very ugly situations in the name of my Maylee. I don’t have any children of my own, and I practically raised her. I miss everything about her, and I’ve feared for her life for three years now. My drive is to find her, dead or alive. I’ll either bring her home, or bring her justice.

AC: Let’s hope it’s the former. If Chance was sitting here, what would he say your best quality is?

AB: He’d say my stubbornness is both my best quality, and the most irritating. (sighs with a loving smirk)

AC: Compatibility in the boudoir is important. Describe your ideal lover.

AB: Chance showed me everything I’d been missing out on all these years plus some. I didn’t realize how much I needed to be felt and adored until he stripped me down, and made me his own. The equal measures of both give and take. For me, pleasure is in the passion and long awaited anticipation.

AC: If Chance could seduce you with his culinary skills, what dish would be the one to have you eating out of his hands, per se?

AB: I was once extremely out of shape with terrible eating habits. Since I changed my self destructing ways, I’ve grown very fond of fresh fruit and veggies smothered in vinaigrette. Chance could tie my hands behind my back, and hand feed me bite after bite of strawberries all day for all I care.

AC: Do you play any instruments, or sing? What kind of music do you listen to?

AB: I can’t carry a tune for the life of me, but I do still love music. I’m moody and like a verity, it really just depends on the moment.

AC: One of the fans’ favorite questions is: do you have any hidden tattoos or piercings?

AB: No, but I do have a birthmark on the back of my neck. It’s in the shape of a heart, and stands out against my kissed by the sun skin. Chance finds it irresistible.

AB: Thank you so much A.C. for having me! It’s been a pleasure!

AC: You’re welcome and thank you again for interviewing in the midst of your search, we wish you good luck in finding Maylee!

My Review 🌹 Bait

CoverBait

Goodreads Button

Title: Bait
Author: Jade West
Genre: Dark-ish Erotic Romance
Rating: 5 ‘s

Blurb

A stranger online. Dark hair and even darker eyes that knew my dirty desires before I did.
A fantasy that should never be spoken. But he pulled the confession from me.
And now he’s coming for me.
Rough. Dirty. Dangerous.
It’s supposed to be one night to get me off and make me forget.
He’ll make me his and I’ll pretend I don’t want him to.
I’ll run and he’ll chase.
Because I asked him for this.
I begged him for this.

Tonight, in the darkness, he’s the hunter.
And I’m the bait.

🌹 My Review 🌹

I’m a new reader of Jade West, admittedly because I’m often disappointed by all the hype – that was so not the case this time! New reader, and definitely a new fan. I will commence with the cyber-stalking momentarily, first my review…

Abigail Summers is crazy effed up – seriously. She doesn’t even deny it. She’s fully aware that her needs, desires, fantasies, are borderline psychotic in their insanity. After suffering a horrendous, emotionally and physically gutting experience, she’s run to a new town, new job, to start a new life. Yet, she’s not living. She’s merely going through the motions, skimming the surface without any desire to sink below the surface, because nothing makes her feel alive anymore. Nothing, except for the monster who haunts her dreams. The one she’s been running from most of her life. The one she stopped hoping to escape, and yearns to finally feel the terror of being caught, of being ripped to shreds…anything to feel alive again. Her dreams never let her get that far, so she takes the chance of finding her monster for real by confessing her fantasy with a new online profile. It was crazy stupid, she knows that, and the first 20 or so responses she gets only confirms it. Then, Phoenix Burning replies.

Leo Scott is still burning, scars itching, trapped in that inferno in every possible way. He’s stuck in the aftermath of a real life nightmare that cost him the woman he loved, the brother he used to know, and nearly the business they’d all built together. For over a year, he’d done nothing but focus on the latter, putting all of his blood, sweat and time into rebuilding Scott Brothers from the ashes. His son won’t talk, his sister won’t listen, and his brother won’t stop seeking vengeance. Every day, seven days a week, it’s the same routine. He runs…and never gets anywhere. Because, the guilt won’t let him. Because, the one night he chose not to chase Mariana, was the night he couldn’t run fast enough to save her…to save any of them. When he reads the girl’s online profile, reads her fantasy, he swears it could’ve been Mariana’s ghost who’d penned it and the monster he’d long since buried wakes up with a vengeance. Bait wants the chase, wants what comes after, and Leo’s monster is more than willing to make her nightmares come true.

Maybe then, they can both start feeling alive again.

We all get preconceived notions about a book by its blurb or cover, and let me tell you – they won’t do you any good with Bait. This book was INTENSE. It will lure you in, captivate you and then it will make you squirm, sweat, your heart will race, you will be sublimely uncomfortable, start questioning your own mind and you’ll love every freaking minute of it. The pacing was perfect, allowing the reader to really get in, get deep into each character before their world’s actually collide – and that was such a thrill for me.

This book is not a quickie. I wasn’t able to read it all in one sitting, but had to walk away, give myself a moment to breathe and absorb, before rushing back to find out what happened next. The emotions of each character are full, heady, dripping off the pages – Leo’s are more vibrant and in your face than Abigail’s, but only because he’s dealing with other people who were just as affected by his tragic past as he is.

I won’t add spoilers, just know that this book has everything you could ever want. Drama, suspense, dark, heart-pounding and enticing erotica, the PIERCINGS, OMG – gripping emotions, family turmoil, realistic character development, tragedy, friendships, heart – it will make you feel insane and happy to be there – and then, when you think it couldn’t get any better, it will still manage to surprise you.

Read it!

This is an Honest Review of a book that I purchased. I was not given any kind of compensation from the author in exchange for it, to include an ARC.

Four weeks….

Two days….

Sixteen hours….

…‘Til death.

The first time he laid eyes on her, he stood on the threshold of a doorway he dare not cross. He fell into her fathomless dark gaze, unable, unwilling to shake his soul free and, in that one moment, he knew.

She was meant for him to love.

Untouched by the sordid life that flourished around her, she was sunlight in a gray existence. A smile in a dingy room. A joy such as he’d never known. She was a gift from a cold, unforgiving God. Forever innocent.

Why God would give him such a precious angel, he didn’t know. But he suddenly knew what he was willing to die for. What he’d kill for.

In that instant of clarity the monster that lurked in the dark recesses of his mind was freed. A creature designed to kill. To live and die. Over and over again. Until his angel ascended once more to her place in Heaven at God’s feet where he couldn’t reach her.

‘Til death parted them, she was his and his alone.

Certain she’d been lost to him, the shock of spotting her again in LoDo, a lower downtown section of Denver, nearly brought him to his knees. His brain tried to tell him he was mistaken. She had more curves than he remembered. Her hairstyle and clothes were different.

The others were different, too.

He shook his head against the monster’s treacherous whisper. He refused to listen. Couldn’t listen. His angel smiled at him. His soul recognized her. Somehow, some way, his fractious God had been appeased and given him yet another chance.

The past seven days were hell. Watching her. Wanting to take her. Knowing he couldn’t screw up and lose her again. Tonight, his preparations in place, she’d return to his side where she belonged.

Breathing slow and measured through the full-face ski mask he’d bought at a thrift store, he sucked in a lungful of musty stench. In this uncommon late-May heat wave, he was sweating bullets but the wool soaked it up before it could sting his eyes. The itching would drive him insane, though, if she didn’t come home from work soon.

The LoDo sports bar where she waited tables closed almost an hour ago. She couldn’t have gone on a date at two o’clock on a Thursday morning, could she?

Three times he’d entered her ground floor apartment after she’d left for work, and he’d seen no sign she was involved with anyone. No jockey shorts mixed with her panties in the hamper. No extra razor. The food in the refrigerator wasn’t enough to feed a cat, let alone her and a boyfriend, and the only scent on her pillows was floral. The sole message from a male on her answering machine had identified himself as a special research librarian from the Denver Public Library reminding her to pick up the copy of “The Warwick Genealogy” she’d requested.

That doesn’t mean she isn’t still involved with him, the almighty scion of Thorne Enterprises. She’s probably crawling into his bed like a whore right this minute, letting him do things to her, making her scream….

Screams.

Blood.

Death.

“No! Stop!” he whispered. “That was a mistake!”

Was it? The insidious question lashed him from the dark place in his pounding skull.

He rejected the smirking voice, the vivid images. Think of something else. Anything else. Forgetforgetfor—

A car alarm screamed at an outlying parking lot and dragged him out of his fugue. His eyes cleared. The pain behind them eased to a level he’d learned to carry over the years. He took a deep breath to smother his panic.

Soon, he would kill the nightmares forever. Patrick Thorne would die and the secrets with him. But the contractor hadn’t been punished enough yet. Before he finished, he’d ruin Thorne’s reputation, his livelihood, and destroy everything he loved most in the world.

Just as Thorne destroyed our lives. The man must die! Now!

Restless to escape its bonds the monster thrust knife-hot pain into his brain, but he wrestled it back into the shadows and locked it down. Retribution was almost at hand, but not tonight. This night was about her.

Where the hell was she?

There! Her tennis shoes slapped the sidewalk as she approached. He caught a flash of uniform—shorts and sports shirt, both too tight for decency. Then she walked out of the weak light that pooled across the commons into the dark well that led to her door. Her building superintendent had replaced her broken porch light this morning, but he’d smashed it again. He smiled when she cursed someone named Ronnie.

With a jingle of keys, she passed the niche he’d carved for himself in the shrubs. A bunch of adrenaline surged through him, made him light-headed with anticipation. He shook the buzz from his head and crashed out of the bushes with more noise than he intended.

Her head snapped left. She shot a glance over her shoulder. Her eyes widened. She lunged for the safety of her door.

He chased after her, grabbed her by the throat. A squeeze of her windpipe cut off her scream. He didn’t want to damage her too much. He just needed to get her alone.

To atone. To give him another chance.

With her soft body pressed against him, he groaned with pleasure. It had been so long! For a moment he forgot his purpose, lost in the new scent of her, in the innocent softness of her curves against him. Her breasts were full beneath his forearm. The sweet curve of her ass cradled his stiff penis. With another groan, his grip relaxed.

She screamed. Struggling, she broke loose of his hold.

Shit! Reaching out, he snagged her long ponytail and yanked her back hard. With his other hand, he strangled her next scream into a whimper. “Do that again,” he grated, “I’ll use my knife.” The honed blade was secure in his pocket but she didn’t know that.

“I have money,” she croaked. “Three hundred. Tips. In my pocket. Please! Don’t—”

“Shh. Don’t fight me. Shh,” he crooned into her hair. He tugged a chloroform-laced rag from his pants pocket and fitted it over her nose and mouth. “Just give me another chance, Angel, and everything will be fine.”

This time she’d make the right choice because, God only knew, he’d truly go insane if he had to kill her all over again.

With no leads in the case, Slade is desperate, so when the head of hotel security, small but feisty Taylor Kincaid, gets fired over the incident, he thinks hiring her to help him find the boy is smart. As the situation unravels though, he sees Taylor could be in just as much danger as the missing child. When a terrorist plot is added into the mix, Slade is at the end of his rope and has some tough choices to make fast. Does he save the only woman he’s even considered letting himself love in a very long time? Does he save the child who is the key to keeping their contract? Or does he focus on saving the entire state before it’s too late and they all die?
