It’s time for another #SLS challenge. If you’re just tuning in, the weekly music event can be found on Jim’s blog, A Unique Title For Me, where he lists the rules and upcoming themes. Check it out by clicking the theme link below.
This week’s theme is: A song That Includes Someone Famous In It
I’ve loved “Candle In The Wind” since I was a little girl. It was my original favorite Elton John song. And one of those kind of songs that captivated me, even when I was too young to really know what it was about – the emotion, the melody, they called to me – then when I was old enough to actually understand the lyrics, I fell in love with it all over again.
I’m sure I won’t be the only one to pick this one, but I don’t mind. I can’t think of a better song to share than this masterpiece, sung by the grand master, himself. Enjoy!
Goodbye Norma Jean
Though I never knew you at all
You had the grace to hold yourself
While those around you crawled
They crawled out of the woodwork
And they whispered into your brain
They set you on the treadmill
And they made you change your name
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to
When the rain set in
And I would have liked to have known you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend ever did
Loneliness was tough
The toughest role you ever played
Hollywood created a superstar
And pain was the price you paid
Even when you died
Oh the press still hounded you
All the papers had to say
Was that Marilyn was found in the nude
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to
When the rain set in
And I would have liked to have known you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend ever did
Goodbye Norma Jean
Though I never knew you at all
You had the grace to hold yourself
While those around you crawled
Goodbye Norma Jean
From the young man in the twenty second row
Who sees you as something more than sexual
More than just our Marilyn Monroe
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to
When the rain set in
And I would have liked to have known you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend ever did
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend ever did
